The Department of Anthropology was established in 1936 and its faculty has consistently included distinguished anthropologists of international renown. Members of the department conduct research on present and past human societies, cultural knowledge and practice, human health and nutrition, evolutionary antecedents of humans, and closely related species. We offer graduate training in socio-cultural, linguistic, medical, biological, and archaeological branches of the field with an emphasis, at the doctoral level, on empirical research and long-term fieldwork. Why has skin pigmentation become one of the best-understood complex human traits while hair morphology remains comparatively unresolved? This talk compares a century of genetic research on both traits, highlighting the roles of phenotype definition and mechanistic understanding in shaping scientific knowledge.

Drawing on ethnographic research in the Brazilian Amazon, Jeffrey Hoelle traces the imprint of cultivation across the naturally growing “covers” of land and body. Linking forests, pastures, lawns, and hair, he examines cultivation as both a practice and an ideological system shaped by an aesthetic of control.

Prof Shiho Satsuka currently has an art coproduction (Research and Story by Satsuka, Animation and Installation by Liu Yi) titled “Matsutake Lead the Way." The animated film is currently displayed in the special exhibition Fungi: Anarchist Designers.

The entire exhibit is an interdisciplinary collaboration and hopes to present fungi as independent organisms and designers. 🍄🍄‍🟫

The exhibit is currently on in Nieuwe Instituut, the National Museum for Architecture, Design and Digital Culture, in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, from November 20, 2025 to August 8. 2026.
