The Department of Architectural Science is dedicated to the pursuit of integrated, sustainable approaches to the design and development of the built environment. The Department offers a pre-professional Bachelor of Architectural Science degree, with options in Architecture, Building Science, and Project Management, the goal of which is to educate students for a wide range of professional roles in

the construction industry. In addition, we offer Masters degree programs in Architecture – designed as rigorous preparation for entry into the architectural profession – and Building Science, a unique program in Canada that offers graduates of building-related programs an opportunity to explore the building science principles necessary to deliver sustainable buildings. Toronto Metropolitan University's professional program in architecture comprises a four-year B.Arch.Sci. degree plus the two-year M.Arch. degree. This program received full accreditation by the Canadian Architectural Certification Board (CACB) in 2010. The Department is located in a Ron Thom-designed facility on the Toronto Metropolitan University campus in the heart of downtown Toronto, and was founded in 1948. We boast a multidisciplinary faculty carrying out a broad array of research, scholarly and creative projects, exciting exhibitions, guest lectures, symposia and other events throughout the year. Most events other than program courses are open to the general public, and are usually free of charge – so come and visit us!

Mark your calendars for September 2026! The exhibition SAY IT LOUD - Toronto — a collaboration between .ca and — will launch in physical and online formats. Rooted in the internationally acclaimed initiative founded by this event will showcase diverse excellence in design. The exhibition will celebrate up to 50 architects through data, graphics, storytelling, and networking.

In particular we are looking for:
- Applicants who live and/or work in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA)
- Applicants must be Black, Indigenous, Person of Color (BIPOC) (He, She, They) or Women of any ethnicity
- Applicants must have a significant role in the submitted project.
- Projects submitted for consideration may be located outside of Toronto.
- Projects can be built or unbuilt

Don’t miss out on the Picoplanktonics: Partners Exhibition Reception on March 26, 2026 from 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. ET!!

Picoplanktonics: Partners exhibit will still be open between March 19 - April 8, 2026 (9am - 5pm)

“Picoplanktonics: Partners” is a student-led exhibition that presents the project through the perspectives of those directly involved in its making and care. Centering student voices, the exhibition reflects on their contributions to the work, through producing its components, supporting its installation, and maintaining its presence over time. Drawings, mock-ups, assembly artifacts, and reflections trace how students navigated collaboration, responsibility, and stewardship while engaging the realities of fabrication and exhibition life. By foregrounding the experience of both building and visiting Picoplanktonics at the 2025 Venice Biennale, the exhibition offers an architectural account of learning through participation—where design is understood not only as a finished artifact, but as a lived, collective process.

LGA practices architecture within an expanded and relational field, where projects are shaped as much by social and urban dynamics as by form and material. Working across diverse typologies and scales, the firm is committed to city building and public impact. Picoplanktonics features the world’s largest 3D-printed living structures, made from cyanobacteria. These dynamic, growing forms challenge traditional construction by demonstrating how architecture can collaborate with nature to heal ecosystems. The pavilion has been specially adapted to nurture the structures, with caretakers (including TMU students) tending to them throughout the exhibition.

Professor Hui, alongside collaborators from ETH Zurich and the University of Toronto, contributed to this four-year research effort, which merges biotechnology, sustainability, and design. Several TMU students helped produce visualizations and will assist in maintaining the exhibit in Venice, gaining hands-on experience in cutting-edge ecological design.

In response to the climate crisis, Picoplanktonics reimagines construction as an act of stewardship rather than exploitation. As Hui explains:
“This project isn’t just about building—it’s about co-existing with living systems. We’re showing how design can actively repair the environment.”
