Dr. Robin Metcalfe is a passionate science educator, with over 2 decades of experience teaching physics and astronomy courses at York University. She is also active in STEM-related public outreach events and gives space-themed talks to a wide variety of audiences in both Canada and the U.S. Through her teaching and outreach, Dr. Metcalfe seeks to strengthen our appreciation for what the night sky has to teach us, to gain perspective from our place in the Universe, and to value our precious planet Earth.

TODAY! The Allan I. Carswell Observatory is hosting its first Sundial Tour! Did you know? A bold new astronomical instrument is arriving at YorkU today. It’s so big it wouldn’t fit in either of our domes, and so heavy that it will need a crane to arrive. What is it? No less than the STAIRS: https://www.yorku.ca/science/observatory/sundial/

Welcome to the York University Sundial Tour, one of the most accurate bronze sundials in Canada! Tours are all-ages. These sessions will only go ahead if the weather is CLEAR because we need to be able to see the Sun to run this tour. Masks are recommended.

Date: Wednesday, October 7th, 2026
Time: 2:30 – 4:30 PM ET
Location: The precise location is by the LIONS stadium in line with the observatory and the Lumbers building. From Petrie just walk towards LIONS/Lumbers and you cannot miss it (it should be over 10ft tall!).

Tickets are free but required and the tour is weather dependent so please ensure that the event is still running the day of the event by checking our socials or website at yorku.ca/science/observatory

A fun fact: Just yesterday morning, the announcement for the nobel prize in physics revealed that Francis Halzen has won for his research at the Icecube Neutrino Observatory in the south pole. Today is Space Saturday and today we will be discussing NGC 4698!

Together, the five galaxies of Stephan’s Quintet are also known as the Hickson Compact Group 92 (HCG 92). Although called a “quintet,” only four of the galaxies are truly close together and caught up in a cosmic dance. The fifth and leftmost galaxy, called NGC 7320, is well in the foreground compared with the other four. NGC 7320 resides 40 million light-years from Earth, while the other four galaxies (NGC 7317, NGC 7318A, NGC 7318B, and NGC 7319) are about 290 million light-years away. This is still fairly close in cosmic terms, compared with more distant galaxies billions of light-years away. Studying these relatively nearby galaxies helps scientists better understand structures seen in a much more distant universe. explanation.
