alumnus Gerome Manson is an assistant professor and researcher in neuromechanics and motor control at --but he didn’t always envision an academic career for himself. Manson, a graduate from the Ph.D., MPK, and BKin programs, shared his career trajectory with KPE students at the inaugural KINections BIPOC Career Café last month.

Manson worked in a variety of roles as he explored different career paths, from being an ambassador, tour guide, and community animator at U of T to a research assistant in two labs at KPE. Outside of the Faculty, he worked as a sales rep for Hewlett Packard and as a freelance scientific writing editor when he was abroad. He also worked as a meal delivery biker between finishing his Ph.D. and moving to Houston, where he did a one-year post-doctoral fellowship in neurosurgery at Houston Methodist Research Institute prior to getting the faculty position at Queen’s.

“In all of these jobs I learned valuable skills that help me now in my role as a professor and researcher,” he says. “Life can hit you in different ways and present many challenges, especially for BIPOC students. I would like students to take away the idea that you don’t always see an end, and it is okay to change your idea.”

Li-Ann Yap went from studying kinesiology at to working at Microsoft as a technology sales rep. She says she only recently became aware of how her experience at the Faculty helped her succeed in her career. When she graduated from the program, she had acquired a breadth of knowledge that spanned across science, sociology, psychology, ethics, and history, but she wasn’t sure how she would be able to apply it in the real world.

“Then I realized that having a wide range of skills and experiences can not only help me adapt to almost any situation, it can also widen my career options,” she says. “10 years ago I would never have guessed that I’d be working in tech.”

This adaptability came in particularly handy in her current job at Microsoft, where she works in technology sales supporting a variety of clients and organizations go through a digital transformation.

“Your career path doesn’t need to be linear or clear-cut or mapped out. An open mind and curiosity are far more important.”

Last week, at the BIPOC Career Café, Marlon Teekah, a graduate of MPK and BKIN program shared his career journey with students. When he graduated from the bachelor’s program and started to run his health coaching business, he saw a major issue with healthy inequity in sports and how wealth determines health. So by going back to school, he was able to explore some of the causes and fill the gaps in his knowledge and the questions he wanted to answer.

“I knew why I wanted to be there, I knew what I wanted to learn and how it would help me afterward,” he says. “The MPK program really helped me, especially Professor Michael Atkinson's class on social inequality in health.”

Teekah partnered with to have placement where students work with him as assistant instructors. He is grateful for all the things he learned at KPE and felt it was important for him to give back.

“It’s like a muscle that keeps growing, a circle of reciprocity,” says Teekah.

Michael Rosenblat, left, a Ph.D. student in exercise science at , found a way to conduct quality research with a large sample size during the pandemic--and none of the participants had to come into the lab.

“Participants are performing all testing and training sessions at their convenience at home using their own smart trainer and a piece of software called TrainerRoad,” he says. “It is common for athletes to train at home using their own equipment on their own schedule, as opposed to coming into a lab. This will help simulate a more realistic training environment and give us more realistic results.”

According to Rosenblat, this is the first international interval training study of its kind collaborating with various international institutes, which also contains the largest sample size of any sport science study that has been conducted.
