Social Justice Education, OISE, University of Toronto

Social Justice Education, OISE, University of Toronto The Department of Social Justice Education (SJE) is an intellectual community committed to producing and advancing knowledge on social justice education.

The Department of Social Justice Education (SJE) is an intellectual community committed to producing and advancing knowledge on social justice education in Canada and beyond. We understand social justice education as a robust term, allowing for diverse meanings and methodologies. Its graduate program is concerned with both theoretical and empirical problems regarding in/equity in educational space

s, broadly conceived. Faculty and students approach their inquiries from disciplinary (e.g., anthropology, history, philosophy, political science, or sociology) and/or interdisciplinary (e.g., anti-colonial, critical race, disability, feminist, francophone, indigenity, indigenous, or queer) perspectives. They focus on identifying new relationships and making connections by asking significant questions about social justice education within and across disciplines. Hence, they foreground research and teaching in social justice education, pursued through the analytical and empirical tools from the humanities and social sciences. The department’s vision is to enable both graduate students and initial teacher education students to explore questions, such as “What was, what is, and what should be the relationship between education and society?” and “What kinds of knowledge do educators need to answer those questions?” The department aims to provide students with the academic knowledge and skills necessary to engage and raise questions of critical importance to educational theories and practices, and their relationship to individuals, communities, and societies.

This year’s conference brings together scholars, activists, artists, healers, and community organizers from across the African continent and diaspora to engage in powerful, transnational dialogue rooted in Black and African feminist traditions. In a moment that calls for connection, care, and collective imagination, BAFC 2026 creates an accessible virtual space to share knowledge, build solidarity, and move from theory to transformative praxis.

⌛️ Call for Abstracts due April 20, 2026 – BAFI is still accepting submissions for papers, panels, workshops, posters, and creative presentations that center Black African feminist thought and practice.

Founded by Dr. Njoki Wane, BAFI continues to cultivate spaces that honour the intellectual richness of African and diasporic feminist scholarship while challenging dominant frameworks of knowledge production. As a Professor and former Chair of the Social Justice Education department at OISE, she exemplifies a deep and ongoing connection between BAFI’s work and SJE’s commitments to critical, decolonial, and transformative education.
