This week, we hosted Public Health Science Orientation Day for our incoming Master's and Doctoral students at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health — and the energy in the room said everything about the year ahead.

New cohorts of researchers, practitioners, and future public health leaders came together to start building the relationships, ideas and momentum that will carry them through their programs. It's always a privilege to watch that first spark of community take shape.

We're thrilled to share that the Dalla Lana School of Public Health will welcome Dr. Shu (Joy) Jiang as the Eddie Goldenberg Research Chair of Canada in Translational Digital Health in 2027.

Dr. Jiang is a biostatistian and AI health researcher renowned for pioneering the use of longitudinal mammogram images to predict breast cancer risk and for advancing the translation of AI innovations into clinical practice.

At DLSPH, she will lead the development of national infrastructure for AI medical imaging deployment, a first-of-its-kind platform connecting hospitals, regulators, and industry to bring validated AI tools to Canadian patients at scale.

A transformative $6 million gift from Drs. Michael and Amira Dan is expanding Indigenous-led health research here at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health.

The donation establishes two new endowed professorships at the Waakebiness Institute for Indigenous Health (WIIH): The Duke Redbird Professorship in Indigenous Wellness and the Ozhaawashkobinesiik Professorship in Indigenous Health Systems Research.

“These positions will support research grounded in Indigenous governance and ethics in health,” says Dr. Ethsi (Suzanne) Stewart, director at WIIH. “Across Canada and the world there are very few endowed Indigenous health research professorships, particularly in health systems and wellness. These positions expand the pool of Indigenous scholarship and create space and capacity to lead Indigenous health research worldwide.”

We are proud to share that DLSPH faculty members Drs. Audrey Laporte and Arjumand Siddiqi have been named 2026 Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS) Fellows.

In addition to DLSPH’s core faculty, we would also like to congratulate Dr. Andrea Tricco, professor (status-only) of epidemiology and health systems research, and Dr. Niall Ferguson, professor (status-only) in the Clinical Epidemiology and Health Care Research (CEHCR) program, who were also named 2026 CAHS Fellows.

The CAHS Fellowship is considered one of the highest honours in Canada’s health sciences community.

Drs. Laporte, Siddiqi, Tricco and Ferguson join a list of more than 20 DLSPH faculty members who received this honour in the past decade. This growing list reflects DLSPH’s continued leadership in advancing research, education and public health impact in Canada and beyond.

For DLSPH alumni Anneke Hobson and Renita Lam (MPH, 2017), the connection is clear. Inspired by their studies in DLSPH's MPH Nutrition and Dietetics program, Hobson and Lam founded Dietitians for Climate Action, an organization that helps dietitians connect healthy eating with environmentally sustainable food choices.
