VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY - UTS is hosting a great day of debate at our 30 Humbert location on Saturday March 28th. We are welcoming several hundred top debaters from some of the most prestigious independent schools in the Province as part of the Fulford Debate League.

We require three adult judges in each of our debate rooms. We need 50+ volunteers to offer feedback to the brave students who stand up to verbally duel.

The day begins at 8:30 and wraps up by 2:30 - lunch is included. We provide all the training (no prior debate experience required).

Do you want to network with 300 university students about climate change?

From July 6 to 9, Université Laval (Québec City, Canada) will host the first International Student Summit on Climate Change. This event will bring together some 300 university students from across the world. These university students will have the opportunity to participate in various activities (including conferences, training, debates, workshops, and visits) on student actions related to climate change.

UTS alumnus Khalid Esmail '10 would like to invite you to a twenty-minute talk he will give on mental health and stigma on Tuesday, April 30th. The event will include open and facilitated conversations between strangers. The event is happening from 7-9 pm at Plentea Tea Shop at 1205 Queen Street West (Dufferin and Queen).

Katherine Magyarody’s (‘06) debut novel The Changeling of Fenlen Forest arrives in bookstores on April 5th. This fantasy novel for young adults features uncanny doubles, time-travelling unicorns and “irresistible romance.” Katherine is hosting a book launch at Bakka Phoenix Books (84 Harbord Street, Toronto) on Saturday, April 13 from 4-6. If you enjoy creative writing or unicorn-shaped cookies, come talk to an alumna who offers both!

Bill Sherk '61 is writing a series of articles entitled “Old Toronto Car Dealers” and the stories behind the cars they sold now being published in OLD AUTOS, a cross-Canada newspaper available in print or online.

UTS first opened its doors in 1910, when the horses in Toronto outnumbered the cars. Henry Ford brought out the Model T in 1908, but only a few would be seen on Toronto streets when the first UTS students entered the building.

Imagine the incredible variety of antique, classic, and special interest cars owned by the families of UTS students over the past 100 years with stories waiting to be told – and cars owned by the students themselves while attending UTS.

So start looking through your family photo albums for cars owned by members of your family as far back as 1910 and all the years since then. You can email photos and stories that will be forwarded to Bill at [email protected].
