Sometimes, the path you start on becomes something much bigger than you imagined.

For Shania Francis, that journey began at Centennial and led to a career as a licensed paralegal, followed by the creation of Iron Gavel Advocacy.

Today, Shania is using her experience to support and connect the next generation of legal professionals through mentorship, education and professional development.

Her story is about finding your voice, taking chances and creating opportunities for others along the way.

The trades are having a moment.

As perceptions change, more Canadians are taking a fresh look at skilled trades as a career path — from electrical and automotive to transportation, construction and more.

Centennial graduate Mr. Kugan is one example. In 2023, he enrolled in a government-funded electrical pre-apprenticeship program at Centennial. Today, he’s an electrical apprentice with Hydro One.

His journey shows that career paths don’t always have to be linear. With hands-on training and the right opportunities, a new direction can lead somewhere unexpected.

Arshdeep Kaur almost didn’t participate in the NASA Space Apps Challenge.

In 2024, she signed up but decided she wasn’t ready. A year later, during her final semester at Centennial College, she decided to take the leap.

That decision paid off.

As Lead AI Engineer on a multidisciplinary team, Arshdeep helped develop an AI and machine learning solution to identify exoplanets. Her team went on to win three awards at the 2025 NASA Space Apps Challenge Toronto and received a global nomination.

Today, Arshdeep is an application developer at the University of Toronto, where she uses AI and emerging technologies in her work.

Her story is a reminder that you don’t have to feel completely ready to take on a challenge. Sometimes, you just have to start.

What difference can a mentor make?

For students preparing to enter the workforce, having someone to turn to for career advice, perspective and encouragement can make a meaningful difference.

Starting in September 2026, Centennial College’s new Black Career Mentorship Network will connect Black students with experienced Black professionals through small mentorship groups.

Over approximately five months, students and mentors will take part in four guided sessions covering topics such as networking, personal branding, career goals, interview preparation and self-doubt.

The network is designed to help students build confidence, gain real-world insights and see themselves reflected in the careers they aspire to.

It’s also an opportunity for mentors to share their experience, give back and connect with the next generation of professionals.
