Congratulations Dr. Yi! The Faculty of Divinity is delighted to welcome him as Director of this new Institute.

Dr. Jizhang Yi has been appointed Director of the Institute for Humanistic Buddhist Thought & Practice in the Trinity College, Toronto, Faculty of Divinity!

Dr. Yi received his conjoint PhD in Philosophical Theology from Trinity College and the University of Toronto and was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University. His research spans comparative philosophy, theology and religious studies, with particular interests in Chan/Zen Buddhism, Humanistic Buddhism, existential philosophy and interreligious dialogue. Having served as Interim Director, Dr. Yi has already made valuable contributions to the Institute and the Trinity community. In the past year, he helped establish the present Institute and organized the first international conference hosted by the Institute at the College. In his leadership role, he will continue to expand the research agenda and course offerings of the Institute.

We are delighted to celebrate Dr. Yi’s appointment and look forward to the continued growth and impact of the Institute under his leadership.

Many thanks to Venerable Huei Kai, Deputy Abbot of FGS Monastery (Taiwan), and Venerable Chueh Fan, Abbess of FGS Toronto, for their gracious visit to Trinity College and unwavering support of our newly launched Institute for Humanistic Buddhist Thought & Practice. We feel truly inspired as we embark on these meaningful activities together.

Proposal submissions are now open for the upcoming Conference to be held on Friday, November 13, 2026, at Knox College, 59 St. George Street, Toronto. Info: https://bit.ly/449UrWd

The theme of the conference is: "TST Asks: How Does Theology Respond to Our Complex World?"

Here are just a few of the possible topics to consider:
- AI, misinformation, and public trust
- Climate anxiety, ecology, and theological responsibility
- Polarization, democracy, and social fragmentation
- Migration, displacement, and belonging
- Indigenous reconciliation and decolonization
- Religion, violence, and peace building
- Mental health, loneliness, and community

All areas of theological study are welcome: systematic, historical, practical, ecumenical, interfaith, sacred text, psychotherapy/spiritual care, etc.

TST and non-TST students and faculty may submit a proposal to present a paper and/or organize or participate on a panel.
