UDEM invites you to join us (from the comfort of your home) for our Research Tools for DEMS event on Wednesday, March 9 at 4 PM on Zoom.

This session will cover tools, tips, and tricks for negotiating the York U research and library resources to help you locate the right articles for your papers, cite sources with confidence, and get in-person and virtual help and guidance from librarian, Shelly Shapero.

Like this post to receive a DM with the zoom link. Hope to see you there!

Good day Disaster Artists! WE'RE THROWING A PARTY! (sort of)

If you’re anything like us (the UDEM council), then you are sick of the pandemic, you’re an enthusiastic nerd, and you like using activities to make friends because you’re awkward åƒ.

If this sounds like you, or if it doesn’t but you are also a person with two thumbs and a heart (or just one thumb, or no thumbs, thumbs are not a requirement…neither is the person thing, please bring your cat) then I would like to invite you to spend an evening with me and the rest of the UDEM crew at our upcoming SPEED FRIENDING event!

While anyone currently enrolled at YorkU is welcome, this is still a very exclusive event in that it could very well be our ONLY VIRTUAL EVENT OF THE SEMESTER!! (please…please let it be the last virtual event).

If you are a current York student that would like to play some goofy games and talk disasters, then please like or comment on this post and we will PM you the Zoom link to the event this FRIDAY the 28TH from 6-8!

While the event will span the two hours, you can drop in and out at your convenience. Play silly games, and get to know your peers.

It is very important that everyone in attendance understands that the tone of this event will be fun and casual, but ultimately respectful. We aim to create and curate safe spaces for any and all. Hate and harassment will not be tolerated, but it will be remembered. If you have any concerns while in attendance please reach out to any of the UDEM executive hosts via this email address - [email protected], or in a PM over zoom or whatsapp (group invite link to be provided at the beginning of the event), and we will do our best to listen and act with you.

Additionally, if you have accessibility requirements that we can accommodate please let us know how we can provide you with those accommodations.

We REALLY hope to see you all there.

It's pretty hairy out there folks!

Beware of slips and falls, whiteout conditions, and unmaintained roads. Remember that emergency services will be more overwhelmed than usual (in an already overwhelming time) and any services you need will likely take longer than normal to get where they are going.

If you know vulnerable people in your neighbourhood and have the ability, consider reaching out to them to see if there is anything they need. Help shovel a path from Nanna's front door to the sidewalk, bring some rolls of toilet paper to the house with the brand new baby, go get the mail for a friend who has mobility challenges.

Consider this when planning snow removal: as important it is to be able to mobilize, be careful with your heart. Snow shovelling is hard work and is partially responsible for many heart attacks every year. If you are feeling winded, take a break!

And if you can, GO SLEDDING! Just make sure to stay distanced, have fun, and be safe.

Speaker Series - Personal Experiences in DEM
DEMSA is organizing a three-part speaker series to bring personal stories of impactful lessons learned, helpful resources, and tips and tricks for working in the field of DEM. Each session will be an hour long and feature a variety of speakers sharing their short (10-15min) experience as it relates to the theme of the night. Each session will end with a Q&A period so you will have an opportunity to connect with speakers and ask your questions.
