George Brown College First Generation Students

George Brown College First Generation Students First Generation Students are students who are the first in their family to attend a Post-Secondary institution (George Brown College).

The First Generation program, based in the Community Partnerships Office at George Brown College, serves students who are the first in their families to attend a Post-Secondary institution. It doesn’t matter if you have brothers, sisters or cousins that have gone before you, it’s the generation above you (your parents) that counts. This fact alone makes all the difference and determines if you are

a First Gen student or not. In other words, if your parents or primary caregiver did not received an actual certificate, diploma or degree from an accredited college or university anywhere in the world, then you are officially a First Gen student by being enrolled in a Post-Secondary program right here, right now. So, are you a First Gen student? Welcome to the “club”!! 
You are awesome and changing your family legacy! What we do:
The First Gen program at GBC offers many services for prospective or current First Gen students enrolled in any program at George Brown. Here’s a list of the ways we can help you succeed while you’re here:
• Entry Advising (helping you get here)
• Academic Advising (helping you stay here)
• Career Advising (helping you when you leave)
• Educational Coaching (to keep you on track with your goals)
• Service Learning & Volunteer Opportunities (both within the college and the broader community to help you gain experience for your resume, meet new people, develop new skills)
• First Generation Student Club (Join like-minded fellow students to create something new)
• Reference Letters for engaged students (useful for getting a new job, opportunities or bursaries)
• Advocacy and Referrals (for services to help you succeed academically, personally and socially)
• First Generation Bursary (to help offset financial costs of living and going to school)

Hey Everyone!
We just heard back from the Ministry and the bursary is FINALLY available to you!! So log onto STU-VIEW, go under "Student Awards" and fill out all the bursaries you can! Don't forget to click "Yes" when it asks "Are you a First Generation Student?" .. Our application will be prompted to you when you click "Yes"!!! The deadline to apply is next Friday, September 30th. Let us know if you have any questions or if you're having any difficulties filling it out!! GOOD LUCK!!!!! :)
