SAINT MARY'S CLAIMS FIRST MEN'S TITLE

A strong Saint Mary's team swept past Dalhousie 3/0 today in the men's final of the Atlantic University Tennis Championships claiming their first ever title. SMU started strong winning both the men's doubles matches with Evan McNicol and Satyam Verma beating Raul Martinez and Aaron Yip 8/4 and Matt Van Amburg and Sabrang Sandal taking the win over Spencer Robertson and Graeme Larsen by a score of 8/6. And then all it took was one singles match win by Evan McNicol over Graeme Larsen 6/1, 6/1 to seal the deal and give Saint Mary's the AUTL men's title.

In the women's 3rd place match, UNB squeaked out a close win over UPEI taking the match 3/2. In the men's 3rd place match, defending champion Memorial downed UNB in a 3/0 sweep.

The men's league individual awards were also handed out today with Evan McNicol from SMU winning League Most Valuable Player, Sabrang Sandal from SMU winning Freshman of the Year, and Finnegan Ku**er of UNB taking the Sportsmanship Award.

This was the first year that the AUTL changed their format and instead of having an overall team champion, now has a women's champion, Memorial, and a men's champion, Saint Mary's. Both teams will represent the Atlantic league in the National University Championships this summer which takes place in Montreal and Toronto in conjunction with the Rogers Cup.
