♦️Brother Spotlight ♦️
Brother Yury Onikashvili is an incoming 3rd year Chemical Biology student. He recently finished a summer research internship in BC Children’s Hospital’s Emergency Department. Yury recruited patients alongside their families into studies involving faster ways to diagnose appendicitis by taking blood samples, new ways to treat broken arms using new drug mixtures and cast types, and testing a new mental health diagnosis tool. Extending his contract, he’ll be continuing his work at Children’s throughout the 21’-22’ school year. During his time off, find him walking people home on an AMS Safewalk shift, volunteering for the South Vancouver Neighborhood house to deliver groceries to vulnerable populations, or teaching elders guitar through zoom.
Following this experience, Yury had this to say:
“Psi Upsilon has pushed me to become the best version of myself through the amazing people I am constantly surrounded by. Our diverse brotherhood is made up of people from all over the world as well as from all walks of life – engineers, business students, scientists – even medical students. When you see your brother succeed at something and turn around and tell you – you can do this too, it really helps me believe in myself. In particular, brothers Lucas Rempel and Connor Keane have been guiding voices in helping me explore research, and provided invaluable advice on how to conduct myself in healthcare as someone working at a hospital, as well as showing me amazing things I can devote my free time to. All in all, the support from the people around me is the only reason I’ve gotten to where I am today, and I am grateful.”
Congrats Yury, we look forward to seeing your journey unfold! 👏
