Meet Dalton, student intern from the Langara College Recreation Program () at Christine Sinclair Community Centre in Burnaby ( )

In addition to taking on the intern role, Dalton also works for the City of Vancouver, primarily as an Aquatic Leader and lifeguard. He brings his experience from the pool & special events planning to work closely with the site supervisor & recreation coordinators at CSCC to deliver high quality recreation. From completing multiple mini-projects to helping plan & conduct Family Day activities, he has experienced lots of aspects of municipal recreation and been able to apply the skills and theories from the classroom to the workplace.

The Recreation Leadership Program is unique because it allows students to have hands-on experience working in recreation of all different types. From private, to municipal, to not-for-profit, to a brand new designation in therapeutic recreation, there are many avenues that graduates of this program can explore and pursue.

In 2025 Langara College introduced a first-of-its-kind micro-credential to train municipal recreation staff for leadership roles. The program blends academic theory with real-world application and supports community well-being and social equity.

Integrative Praxis in Community Recreation is one of the micro-credential courses where learners tackle real municipal recreation challenges! Through teamwork, research, mentorship, and evidence‑informed problem‑solving, students turn theory into action—developing strategies that make a real impact. The journey ends with presenting recommendations directly to city recreation leaders.

The program is taught in the community so there's no need to travel to Langara.

Five days, four nights, and one unforgettable start to the semester ⛰️

In September, our Recreation Leadership Diploma students spent time exploring through Garibaldi Provincial Park with Outward Bound Canada — cooking together, navigating challenges, setting up campsites, and learning what leadership looks like when the trail gets steep, the packs feel heavy, and teamwork becomes crucial in everything they do.

What began as a group of students who barely knew one another quickly became a community. Out here, students emphasized problem-solving, communication, and supporting one another— all of which are future-friendly leadership skills that matter in any workplace, especially in a world of rapid change and AI.

We came home tired, proud, and connected in a way that only shared adventure can create!

This is where leadership begins; not in a classroom, but out in Mother Nature where real-world experiences take hold and shape connections.

What an incredible week at the 2025 BCRPA Symposium! Our students, grads and faculty showed up and showed out at the annual gathering of recreation professionals, educators and leaders, this year taking place in Whistler🍏

There was no shortage of highlights. Our team (including VIU grads and CapU) organized an amazing performance (nabbing 2nd place!), faculty research sparked important conversations with attendees around AI and community engagement, our students made a huge impact on the BCRPA volunteer team, and our very own Coleman was awarded a DB Perks Scholarship🧑‍🎓 (way to go!!). We also connected with delegates at our tradeshow booth to share more about our programs and opportunities, including our new employer-sponsored microcredential program, designed for current recreation staff.

As usual, a huge thank you to the BCRPA for organizing and running such a remarkable and special event. We’re proud to be a part of this incredible community and are excited to help guide the future of recreation. ✨
