On National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we recognize the importance of listening, learning, relationship-building, and supporting Indigenous communities in meaningful and ongoing ways. 🌲🛶🐾🌎

Today, we’re sharing an upcoming Recreation Studies initiative developed in partnership with First Nations communities: Indigenous Leadership in Recreation, a new three-course micro-credential for Indigenous recreation workers, youth and emerging leaders, and community members interested in recreation as a career.
Through online learning, hands-on learning in community, and practical application, learners will build skills in leadership and facilitation, recreation programming and events, and networking and partnerships.

The program is open to learners aged 16+ and is anticipated to run January–April 2027. Final schedule and program details to be confirmed.

Learning beyond the classroom! 🛶 Our RECR 1170 (Introduction to Recreation Facilities and Environments) students recently visited the False Creek Community Centre on Granville Island for a behind-the-scenes look at how a community recreation facility operates - especially a centre that's as uniquely positioned as this one.

Students got a tour of the space from dedicated staff, learned more about facility operations and programming, and explored some of the day-to-day considerations involved in delivering recreation services to the community (and of course, no visit to False Creek would be complete without getting out on the water for some kayaking) 🌊

A big thank-you to the False Creek team for welcoming our students and sharing their time and expertise with us.

🎓 BRM Entrance Scholarship — $2,500

New Recreation Studies students: we’ll see you tomorrow! 👋

Join us for our Student Orientation on Wednesday, September 2nd from 10–11 AM, in room G103.

This is an early chance to meet faculty and staff, learn more about the program and department, ask questions, connect with other students, and score some free Recreation Studies swag while you’re there 😎

Recreation Leadership Diploma students are especially encouraged to attend, and BRM students are welcome to join us as well for the chance to meet faculty and connect with the department in-person.

🎓 Please join us in congratulating our very own graduate Ethan Haldeman on receiving the President’s Medal of Academic Excellence at this year's Convocation! 🏅

The President’s Medal is one of Langara College’s highest student honours, recognizing outstanding academic achievement, leadership and contributions to the college community. Ethan was selected as this year’s sole recipient for his work in the Bachelor of Recreation Management degree program: a reflection of the hard work, commitment, and positive impact he has made throughout his time at Langara.

We’ve had the privilege of watching Ethan grow as a student, leader and member of our Recreation Studies community, and we couldn’t be more proud to see him receive this well-deserved recognition. Last week at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, faculty, family and friends celebrated the achievements of our Rec Leadership Diploma and Bachelor of Recreation Management students as they crossed the convocation stage and marked this important milestone. Meet Dalton, student intern from the Langara College Recreation Program () at Christine Sinclair Community Centre in Burnaby ( )

In addition to taking on the intern role, Dalton also works for the City of Vancouver, primarily as an Aquatic Leader and lifeguard. He brings his experience from the pool & special events planning to work closely with the site supervisor & recreation coordinators at CSCC to deliver high quality recreation. From completing multiple mini-projects to helping plan & conduct Family Day activities, he has experienced lots of aspects of municipal recreation and been able to apply the skills and theories from the classroom to the workplace.

The Recreation Leadership Program is unique because it allows students to have hands-on experience working in recreation of all different types. From private, to municipal, to not-for-profit, to a brand new designation in therapeutic recreation, there are many avenues that graduates of this program can explore and pursue.
