A team of UBC students, including Rozina Khoja (Integrated Sciences), Ish*ta Sharma, Brett Caswell, and Perry Lawrence, recently travelled to Toronto to represent the university in the final round of the Innovation North Student Challenge. Sponsored by ATCO, the national competition invites students to use systems thinking to explore complex Canadian issues, with this yearโ€™s challenge focused on rethinking housing in Canada.

In the final round, the team was recognized with ๐‘ป๐’‰๐’† ๐‘ถ๐’—๐’†๐’“๐’๐’๐’๐’Œ๐’†๐’… ๐‘ท๐’†๐’“๐’”๐’‘๐’†๐’„๐’•๐’Š๐’—๐’† ๐‘จ๐’˜๐’‚๐’“๐’…, one of three awards available. The award celebrates work that moves beyond mainstream housing discourse by surfacing voices, experiences, and ways of seeing that are often left out of the conversation. Their project encouraged a broader reflection on Canadaโ€™s housing challenges and the importance of paying attention to what dominant discussions can miss. UBC Science UBC Integrated Sciences

Learn more about our current students! โญ๏ธ Meet Morgan, a 5th year Integrated Sciences Student ๐Ÿ’™

Needing some inspiration for your degree proposal? Check out how Morganโ€™s disciplines align with the integration of physiology, global sustainability and sportsmedicine!

Courses:
KIN 411 - Neuroanatomy of Human Movement
This course provides a deeper understanding of how the nervous system controls motor and sensory function, where information travels together, and how symptoms present after injuries to the nervous system. By understanding the neural pathways involved in movement, this course allows me to approach sports medicine from both a biological and functional perspective.
ISCI 461: Comparative Field Course: Systems Approaches to Regional Sustainability (Hawaii)
This course offers a unique opportunity to analyze sustainability by examining how geological processes, island ecosystems, and human activity interact as interconnected systems. Building upon the principles introduced in ISCI 360 and further developed in the ISCI 361 Iceland Field Course, Hawaiiโ€™s dynamic landscapes cultivate systems thinking by revealing complex feedbacks and interdependencies that drive ecological resilience, resource management, and sustainability challenges.

Learn more about our current students! โญ๏ธ Meet Vicky, a 3rd year Integrated Sciences Student ๐Ÿ’™

Needing some inspiration for your degree proposal? Check out how Vickyโ€™s disciplines align with the integration of physiology, neuroscience and public health!

Disciplines:
1) Neuroscience: Coming from a culture where discussions about mental health are still widely stigmatized, I was inspired to unearth the complexities of the brain. My experience of volunteering at a local care home as a social visitor for seniors with dementia also sparked my interest
in improving the lives of people with neurodegenerative diseases throughout my career, which can begin by integrating Neuroscience my degree.
2)ย ย Physiology: By learning about the diverse mechanisms and processes in physiological systems, I can appreciate the intricacies of the human bodyand apply knowledge learned in physiology classes to complement my
neuroscience discipline. Moreover, since the brain is interconnected with various parts of the body through the nervous system, a strong understanding of physiology can help me better understand its influence
on the rest of the body.
3) Public Health: Intersecting between sciences and humanities, public health provides me with a solid understanding of the socioeconomic implications of healthcare, such as nutrition in developing countries. I hope
to learn about how members of diverse cultural and ethnic communities approach the healthcare system through public health seminars, helping me further develop empathy and understanding.
