On April 2nd the Artemis II Mission Orion spacecraft carried Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen with crewmates Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch on an eight minute lift into space, the first stage of the first crewed mission in over 50 years to orbit the Moon. As the world was watching this historic moment, our student telescope operators viewing the sky from THUNDERBIRD SOUTH, our remote-operated telescope in Chile, caught these amazing photos of the launch! Thank you to our student operators A. Schildhorn (UBC), Sean Heakes (UBC), A. Kauffman (UBC), C. Hemmann (UBC), S. Chan (UBC); and supervisors A. Boley (UBC) and D. D. Hey Young Scientists! Looking for a fun science camp? Blast off this summer with our Phenomenal Physics & Astronomy camps, running for four weeks in July, 2026! Summer camps are our favourite event of the year: this is where we get to meet young, curious minds and inspire a love of science in all of our campers – regardless of level or ability or experience – and to show that physics is everywhere in our world in visible and invisible ways. We offer camps for kids from grades 1 to 6; each 25-student camp includes a certified BC teacher, an undergraduate student instructor, and 4-6 high school volunteers. Time Magazine's recent article on SpaceX's Gwynne Shotwell tells of SpaceX's plans to "expand its Starlink internet constellation from its current 9,400 satellites to 20,000" and its recent request to get licensing for a mega-constellation of "up to a million AI satellites". This ambitious and unilateral plan is concerning: orbital lanes at 300 mile altitudes above earth are already crowded. As UBC Astronomer Dr. Aaron Boley explains, "Satellites cannot stop, go, and make large turns like a car...altogether, the collision potential on orbit is a serious concern". Read more about a future as visioned by SpaceX and some potential consequences for space flight, space use and space junk, here: https://time.com/article/2026/03/26/gwynne-shotwell-profile/ UBC Science alumni UBC University of British Columbia TRIUMF UBC Engineering UBC Rocket The UBC Physics Society The UBC Astronomy Club UBC Engineering - Okanagan UBC Women In Science Graduate Student Society - UBC Vancouver
