This was one of the testimonials shared after Chit Chaat, our in-person community gathering centering LGB+ South Asian youth, connection, conversation, and care.

At SARAVYC, we know research also lives in rooms where people feel seen, heard, and safe enough to share their experiences.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, contributed to the conversations, supported one another, and helped create such a thoughtful space. More community gatherings, conversations, and chai-fuelled reflections to come!

Special shoutout to for co-hosting this event with us!

This , we’re sharing what the data shows about gender diverse youth health in BC.

Research shows that discrimination and violence against 2SLGBTQ+ youth increases their risk of suicidal thoughts and attempts. Safe and supportive schools and families can help reduce those risks.

From The Well-Being Gap (Saewyc et al., 2024), a survey of trans and gender-diverse students in grades 7–12 in BC:

— Trans girls with the highest level of family connectedness had 97% lower odds of suicidal thoughts compared to those with the lowest level.
— Trans boys with the strongest school connectedness were 99% less likely to report suicidal thoughts than those with the least school connectedness.
— Nonbinary youth with high school connectedness had 23.8 times higher odds of reporting good or excellent mental health.
These findings come from BC-based survey data collected in 2018 and 2023.

New research opportunity for immigrant youth in Canada 📱

SARAVYC, in partnership with the , is recruiting immigrant adolescents ages 14–19 living in Canada for MyPeer, a 6-month study evaluating a mobile app that shares culturally responsive sexual and reproductive health information and helps youth find youth-friendly services.

Immigrant youth can face stigma, language barriers, and limited access to accurate, youth-friendly resources. This study hopes to better understand how digital tools like MyPeer can support youth in accessing the information and services they need.

Participation involves using the MyPeer app over approximately 6 months, completing 3 short surveys, and having the option to take part in a short interview.
