🤔How can community-led coalition advocacy lead to meaningful change in policies to protect provincial agricultural land, support existing farmers and rural communities, and create pathways for future generations to contribute to sustainable food production and productive agricultural land use?

📚In a collaborative research project with the Dunster Community Association and UBC ORICE, selected students will work to strengthen and sustain an emerging provincial coalition for rural wellbeing, combining coalition coordination, community-engaged research, interviewing, policy documentation, communications, and resource development.

🤔 How is social inclusion understood, experienced, and practiced by people and organizations across a local community mental health system in Kenya?

📚In a collaborative research project with Basic Needs Basic Rights (BNBR) and UBC ORICE, selected students will consider how social inclusion approaches shape the perspectives and experiences of people with lived experience community-based intermediaries, health care providers, and health-system administrators who are interest holders in the mental health system.

📚 Designed for students of all faculties interested in peer leadership, Community Engaged Research (CER), and collaborative project design, the ORICE Scholars Program offers a unique opportunity to engage in experiential learning activities, and gain valuable skills and knowledge through structured training and mentorship.

📝 Interested, but don’t know if you meet the requirements? Here’s a checklist —
1️⃣ Looking to deepen your experience in Community Engaged Research or Advocacy
2️⃣Active 4th year undergraduate or graduate student
3️⃣Have a strong academic record
4️⃣Have previous research & leadership experience

We’re thrilled to launch our Global Experiential Education Program (or GEEP, for short) for another year of fruitful learning, critical engagement, and collaboration!

🎒🌀 GEEP is a fantastic opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to engage in experiential learning rooted in Community Engaged Research (CER) from here at UBC. Whether you are interested in mental health systems strengthening, agricultural policy, or academic freedom and advocacy, you can find opportunities to gain meaningful experience!

👤 Interested, but don’t know if you’ll meet the requirements? As long as you’re an undergraduate (with 60 or more completed credits) or a graduate student with an interest in Community-Based Research (CBR), you’ll be eligible! All faculties welcome.

⭐ This past Winter semester, Women Transforming Cities (WTC) collaborated with PPGA 391A students, as part of the course's experiential component on human rights work. Now, we're thrilled to announce that WTC was able to launch a new resource tool, titled "Centring Civic Accessibility Toolkit⁠."

📚 This tool aims to engage "local government officials and community members, [and] was created to assess current accessibility practices, identify gaps, and plan improvements to make civic spaces and processes more inclusive of disabled residents."

🖥️ This was meaningful work contributed by many! We are pleased to have supported it through a valuable community partnership with the WTC, and are grateful for the work of our students, Simran Braich, Parker Haga, Spencer Hunt, Zahabia Khan, and Jasleen Klair.

This year was no different—from ongoing and newly-started community-engaged research projects under our Global Experiential Education Program (GEEP), to new partnerships established through public engagement, we’ve had a busy year filled with meaningful collaborations.

A couple of weeks ago, we said farewell and good luck to our colleague, Emma Villalobos Lamont! ⭐

Emma has been with ORICE since her undergraduate days when she was Program Assistant with the Human Rights Collective, and most recently full-time as the Program Coordinator.

What photos don’t show is how incredibly organized, mindful and caring Emma is with all that she does - but what the photos do show are the relationships Emma builds and how much we are all loved walking into the office to collaborate with her each day!

Now, as Emma sets forth on a new journey, please join us in wishing her all the best! Thank you for all you have contributed. ❤️
