Join us in celebrating the award recipients of the first-ever SFU Demshot Challenge.

This university-wide challenge invited SFU students to tackle pressing issues facing Canadian democracy with bold, research-informed solutions. Over several months, these shortlisted candidates developed their proposals through workshops on democracy and storytelling before pitching their ideas to a panel of judges in a Dragon's Den-style finale.

Congratulations to top prize winner Tomos Land for his thoughtful proposal exploring the renewal of local journalism, and to everyone who took their shot at advancing democracy.

We’re excited to welcome Katie Robinson, Shannon Perez-Darby and Aslam Bulbulia as panelists for Transformative Justice for Social Change Leaders: Panel & Reception.

Katie Robinson (katie robinson) is a writer, facilitator, scholar, and interdisciplinary artist devoted to exploring possibilities beyond the white supremacist colonial imagination. Their PhD dissertation examined how abolitionists create decolonial, relational worlds through creative anti-carceral practice.

A founding member of the Accountable Communities Consortium Consortium, Shannon Perez-Darby (Shannon Perez-Darby) is a q***r, mixed Latina, anti-violence advocate, author, activist, and consultant whose work centers q***r and trans communities of colour.

Aslam Bulbulia (Aslam Bulbulia) is a facilitator with the The Inner Activist Inner Activist, a Lewis Deep Democracy instructor and a consultant. Drawing on his diverse background, he works to decolonize public engagement and address conflict, power, and decision-making across differences.

Canadian youth are contributing to national conversations on AI safety and online harms.

Through four citizens’ assemblies, 100 youth participants developed recommendations focused on AI safety and online harms – including proposals for age verification and addressing the addictive design of chatbots – and shared them with federal decision-makers.

This work is part of Gen(Z)AI, a project led by SFU’s Dialogue on Technology Project (DoT) in partnership with the McGill Centre for Media, Technology and Democracy and Mila.
