Leadership is not just about managing people. It is about understanding yourself, communicating well, and learning how to work through conflict with empathy.

In UBC’s MEL and MHLP programs, students begin building these skills from orientation week through a professional workshop led by coach and facilitator Tracey Charette.

The workshop helps students develop the confidence, self-awareness, and practical tools needed to navigate difficult conversations, support team dynamics, and lead with accountability.

From bedside care to system-level impact in healthcare

Motivated to create change beyond individual patient interactions, Evan Wilton used UBC’s Master of Health Leadership and Policy to transition from frontline physiotherapy into a role advancing clinical quality, safety and educator support across Vancouver Coastal Health.

Through interdisciplinary learning, leadership training and a hands-on practicum, Evan built the skills to influence healthcare at a broader level while staying connected to clinical practice. His journey highlights how the MHLP empowers professionals to step into roles that shape systems, not just outcomes.
