In health care, building design is not just about walls, energy systems, or technology. It is also about keeping people safe, healthy, and supported in a changing climate.

Students in UBC’s Master of Engineering Leadership in High Performance Buildings are bringing this idea to life through their work with Vancouver Coastal Health.

Through capstone projects and internships, students are applying technical knowledge, business skills, and leadership training to real-world challenges in the built environment. Their work explores low-carbon resilience, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, wildfire smoke impacts, HVAC systems, and future health-care facility design.

From designing concepts for a long-term care facility inspired by Vienna House’s near-net-zero and Passive House principles, to studying how wildfire smoke affects indoor air quality and HVAC efficiency, students are helping shape healthier and more climate-conscious spaces.

This is what innovation in high performance buildings looks like: practical, thoughtful, and focused on people.

In UBC’s MEL and MHLP programs, students begin building these skills from orientation week through a professional workshop led by coach and facilitator Tracey Charette.
