Lab physicians, Drs. Vilte Barakauskas and Kate Chipperfield, at BC Children's and Women's hospital, alongside patient co-leads are spearheading the P2RISM study (Pregnancy and Pediatric Reference Intervals for Safe Medicine) to help improve care for pregnant women and newborns. Healthcare relies heavily on the lab and reference intervals (RIs) to guide test interpretation and patient management, but did you ever wonder how we know what is normal or abnormal? RIs should represent the intended population and method of testing. However, current RIs for pregnant women and neonates are poorly characterized owing to their quickly changing physiology and difficulty in obtaining blood samples from babies.

This study aims to recruit healthy pregnant women and newborns to donate blood samples at 24 hours after delivery (while in hospital with routine tests). These blood samples will be used to calculate normal ranges for several routine blood tests for postpartum mothers and newborns in order to create RIs that clinicians and patients can be confident in. P2RISM Study Pregnancy and Pediatric Reference Intervals for Safe Medicine The P2RISM project will study blood collected from healthy women and babies to develop a guide to help interpret lab test results. This will help identify and manage health problems that could impact moms and babies.

Transform the quality of your research and earn a UBCx Professional Education Certificate by learning the nternational best practices for collecting, storing, and using human biospecimens in the laboratory.

Biospecimen Research Methods is an online course offered by UBC in partnership with www.edx.org. This 6-week, self-paced course has been designed to be flexible with your schedule. Biospecimen Research Methods is delivered over 6 weeks and can be completed in approximately 2-4 hours a week from anywhere, at any-time.

Professionals with extensive experience in biobanking from the University of British Columbia and BC Cancer will teach you the international best practices for biobanking and research involving human biospecimens, based on National Cancer Institute (NCI) and International Society of Biological Environmental Repositories (ISBER) standards.

The course was designed for researchers at any level, including graduate and undergraduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and research technicians, who plan to work with human biospecimens.
