What’s it like to make with muskox wool?

At a workshop held on our campus this past spring, we asked designer and recent graduate Shayla Giroux (MDes 2026) on her experience of being a part of a research-creation project that explores meaning-making with this luxury fibre.

Led by U of T Scarborough (UTSC) Associate Professor Nicole Klenk and ECU Associate Professor Hélène Day Fraser, this project was funded by the Social Sciences Humanities Research Council
(SSHRC).

“Muskox wool, which is also known as qiviut, is a luxury fibre for folks in the south. But for the people in the north, the Inuit, this is an animal that they’ve worked with, hunted for food and used for fibre for millennia,” says Nicole.

“What we’re doing today is exploring the affordances; the qualities of the wool itself, the material and what we can do with it.”

What did extended learning look like in ECU’s past?

From evening classes, art teacher training and Saturday morning classes for young learners, ECU has always encouraged students to learn at their own pace.

Fred Amess, Principal and Evening School Supervisor put it best: “The lights of the school do not go out with the switches but go home in sparks with the students. A light to lighten our city to a more practical application of a truer beauty.”

Today we continue that tradition with our evening classes, Summer Institute for Teens and Junior Art Institute, which invite learners of all ages to explore new ideas, rediscover their creativity and make art and design part of their everyday lives.

Much like the skybound hero in their lauded 2022 film ‘The Flying Sailor,’ three-time Academy Award-nominated animators Wendy Tilby (Alum 1986) and Amanda Forbis (Alum 1988) have emerged from their own journey through time and space and are now standing back up to decide what their lives might hold.

We recently spoke with the artists, illustrators and filmmakers about their fascinating process, what makes (or breaks) a great film, and the people who’ve inspired them ✨
