Join us for an information session on the Master of Food and Resource Economics (MFRE), offered by the UBC Faculty of Land and Food Systems.

The UBC Master of Food and Resource Economics - MFRE applies economics, business, policy, and data analytics to real-world challenges in climate, food, and the environment. Students will have the opportunity to build career-ready skills through data workshops, academic rigour, and a four-month industry Graduating Project.

The session will cover career paths for MFRE graduates, admission requirements, the application process, and what makes a strong application.

Congratulations to Dr. Nina von Keyserlingk on receiving the Animal Welfare Leadership Award from Animal Health Canada!

This award is given to recipients who promote high standards in farmed animal care and work collaboratively to build trust both within Canadian animal agriculture and beyond.

Raised on a cattle ranch in B.C., Dr. von Keyserlingk has grown into a world-leading researcher in animal welfare, influencing policy, professionals, and countless students with her knowledge and generous spirit.

Congratulations to Carol McAusland on being inducted as a Fellow of the Canadian Resource and Environmental Economics Association (CREEA)! This title is given to individuals who have advanced the profession of environmental and resource economics and made significant contributions to CREE and its operations.

Carol’s research focuses on interactions between globalization and public good provision, including climate policy, invasive species, and skilled-labour migration.

Reflecting on Orange Shirt Day 🧡

Last week, the UBC community came together to honour the survivors of Indian Residential Schools, to stand in solidarity with them and their families, and to pay our respects to those who did not survive the residential school system.

In LFS, we are working to address critical issues facing our food system and planetary health. As we tackle these issues, we know that it is imperative to engage and learn from Indigenous peoples in a deep and meaningful way.

LFS is proud to work with UBC Faculty of Forestry & Environmental Stewardship, Dana-Lyn Mackenzie, Danilo Caron, UBC Ceremonies and Events, and the many people who organized the Intergenerational March.

In Tsawwassen, this solemn day was marred by tragedy. Our thoughts are with everyone affected.

When Indigenous Peoples’ knowledge and food systems are healthy and sovereign, they generate social, environmental, economic, and cultural benefits for all people in Canada.

A new report from the Council of Canadian Academies / Conseil des académies canadiennes examines the tools and strategies available for transforming policy and governance in ways that advance Indigenous priorities and bridge western and Indigenous knowledge systems.

LFS researcher Dr. Tabitha Robin served as a member of the expert panel on this report.

The report provides critical contemporary and historical context, identifies key qualities and characteristics of healthy and sovereign Indigenous Peoples’ food and knowledge systems, and highlights Indigenous-led initiatives that support Indigenous food sovereignty.

The Centre for Indigenous Land-Based Education, Research and Wellness at xʷc̓ic̓əsəm invites you to a Sacred Fire ceremony to commemorate the spirits of the children who never returned home, the survivors of residential schools, their families, and their communities on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Where: xʷc̓ic̓əsəm at UBC Farm (3461 Ross Drive, Vancouver, BC)
When: September 30, 2026 from 7:00 am – 6:30 pm (sunrise to sunset)

Light snacks and refreshments will be provided. Everyone is welcome to join!

This event is in partnership with the First Nations House of Learning (UBC First Nations Longhouse) and the Indigenous Land-Based Health, Wellness, and Education Research Cluster.

🌱 Something new is growing at UBC!

Inside Orchard Commons, The POD is exploring how food production can be integrated into the spaces where we live, learn and eat.

LFS Associate Professor Anubhav Pratap-Singh and his research team will compare POD-grown produce with produce from UBC Farm and conventional stores, examining nutritional quality, freshness and flavour. 🔬

Backed by a $100,000 investment from UBC’s Campus as a Living Lab fund, the project is helping explore a more sustainable future for food. 🌿

These awards support research that align with three key areas of focus: urban sustainability, environmental protection of coastal areas, and sustainable approaches to resource-intensive industries, with a particular emphasis on B.C.
