A new personalized mRNA cancer vaccine from Moderna and Merck has shown promising results in a late-stage trial for melanoma. Could this be the beginning of a new era in cancer treatment?

UBC’s Dr. Pieter Cullis — a pioneer in the lipid nanoparticle technology that makes mRNA medicines possible — breaks down how personalized cancer vaccines work, why the latest results are significant and how mRNA is transforming the way we treat cancer.

At UBC, Dr. Cullis and Dr. Anna Blakney are also leading a major research effort through Canada’s Immuno-Engineering and Biomanufacturing Hub to develop a made-in-Canada personalized mRNA vaccine for pancreatic cancer.

Every day, 800+ UBC medical students are training across Metro Vancouver – from Squamish to Richmond and into the Fraser Valley.

They’re learning medicine in the same communities they will one day serve as family physicians, cardiologists, neurologists, oncologists and more.

“I want to offer Surrey the same care my family doctor gave me,” says Mira Lail, a UBC MD student in the Fraser learning community.
