Could an existing lactation drug help prevent breast cancer after childbirth?

A new study co-led by UBC Medicine scientists and collaborators in Spain suggests that cabergoline, a drug commonly used to stop milk production, could offer an unexpected benefit: reducing the risk of breast cancer.

Published in Cancer Discovery, the international team analyzed health records from more than 150,000 women and found that receiving the medication was associated with a 70% lower risk of developing breast cancer. The findings were supported by experiments showing the drug reduced breast tumour incidence in mice by approximately half.

Together, the findings point to a promising new approach to breast cancer prevention, particularly for women at high risk, with preparation for an international clinical trial already underway.

New UBC Medicine spin-off companies and emerging ventures are turning research into health solutions.

Seven new spin-offs launched from UBC Medicine in 2026 have helped UBC mark a major milestone: more than 300 spin-off companies to date. The new companies are advancing new approaches to cancer care, digital health, therapeutics, medical imaging and more.

UBC Medicine researchers are also behind several emerging ventures selected for Innovation UBC’s Fall 2026 Venture Founder cohort.
