NITEP, UBC's Indigenous Teacher Education Program began as an elementary teacher education program in September of 1974 in response to needs expressed by Aboriginal people throughout BC for a more effective and relevant teacher education program. As of September 2004, a Secondary Option for those who want to teach grades eight to twelve was established. For over 40 years, NITEP at the University o

f British Columbia has delivered a teacher education program in an environment that honours diverse Aboriginal traditions and philosophies. Our highly qualified graduates earn a Bachelor of Education Degree (Elementary or Secondary) that prepares them to be effective educators for public, band operated and independent schools.

We’re so proud of Alexis Okabe

We are delighted to announce the 2023 recipient of the Murray Elliott Award for Outstanding Contributions to Teacher Education is the one and only Alexis Okabe! ⁠

The announcement was shared last night at the 2023 BEd Student Awards Night. From all of us in the Teacher Education Office, congratulations Alexis.

Alexis Okabe, a member of the Kitsumkalum First Nation, comes from a family of teachers. In 2019, she joined NITEP (the UBC Indigenous Teacher Education Program) as the Indigenous Education Program Advisor, and she fell in love with the program and students. As of 2021, Alexis has been in the role of Manager, NITEP Advisory Services, for academic advising, awards adjudication, student recruitment and retention, and the overall success of NITEP students.

Congratulations to Dr. Verna Billy-Minnabarriet on receiving the prestigious 2023 Great Trekker Award at the UBC Alma Mater Society Awards Gala held on February 16th, 2023. The award recognizes her outstanding leadership and lifelong dedication to promoting Indigenous education!

Dr. Billy-Minnabarriet is a member of the St’uxwtews (Bonaparte Indian Band) and was raised in the Secwepemc and Nlaka’pamux territories. She currently serves as the Senior Advisor to the Dean on Indigenous Education at the UBC Faculty of Education.

We are proud to honor her remarkable contributions to education and the Indigenous community!
