The Vancouver Academy of Music is a non-profit institution founded in 1969 by the Community Arts Council of Vancouver. VAM is permanently housed in a modern facility at Vanier Park near the city centre with large classroom space, a library, teaching studios, the Koerner Recital Hall, rehearsal rooms for orchestra, choir, ballet, and over eighty parking stalls reserved for VAM students and patrons.

The instructional programs at VAM offer a wide range of classical training for students of instrumental, vocal music, and ballet.

After a fantastic summer of musical fun, we’re excited to dive into another academic year! From competitions to orchestral and chamber music concerts, there’s an extraordinary lineup of activities and events ahead. We can’t wait to welcome everyone back into our halls on Tuesday, September 8 for another wonderful year of music! 🎵

VAM’s Music With Friends program gives children ages 3-6 a fun, pressure-free environment to explore music, creativity, and imagination while taking their first steps into instrumental learning.

Through engaging activities, young musicians develop foundational skills in music reading, ear training, instrument technique, and ensemble playing, all while building confidence and a lifelong love of music!

🎶 A little glimpse into our Orchestral Jamboree today!

We welcomed WonderPhilharmonic Level 1 & 2 back to VAM for a fun day of music, learning, and reconnecting. From icebreakers and rhythm games to a well-earned pizza lunch, today was all about starting the new school year together.

In rehearsal, our musicians discovered that playing in an orchestra is a team sport. They learned how to tune together, how to follow a conductor’s baton, and how everyone needs to listen and work together to create something as simple, and as challenging, as a beautiful pianissimo.

One piece of advice from Mr. E (Joseph Elworthy)especially stayed with us:
✨ “If you don’t know if you’re playing in tune, play softly and listen loudly.”

Every rehearsal is a little lesson in patience, awareness, teamwork, and learning to listen to those around us.

Here’s to a new school year filled with curiosity, teamwork, new friendships, and lots of music-making together!

🥳 Just two more days until our Orchestral Jamboree! 🥳

We can’t wait to welcome young musicians to VAM for this fun and interactive introduction to our Orchestra Program! No previous orchestra experience is required — the Jamboree is a great opportunity for students who are curious about orchestral playing to try it out in a welcoming environment.

From icebreaker games and rhythm activities to sight-reading and orchestra rehearsals, participants will have the chance to build their orchestral skills, meet new musical friends, and experience what it’s like to be part of an ensemble.

✨ Students who participate and enjoy the program may be eligible to skip the audition and join VAM’s Fall Orchestra Program directly!

🤩 That concludes another fantastic Chamberfest at VAM! 🤩

After a week of intensive rehearsals, hard work, and dedication, our musicians took to the stage for a series of remarkable Chamberfest concerts. Our trios, quartets, and quintets captivated audiences and showed us just how powerful and inspiring chamber music can be. 🎵

Our students weren’t the only ones to shine! Our talented Chamberfest faculty brought the festival to a spectacular close with a mesmerizing concert. We’re incredibly grateful for all of their artistry, guidance, and hard work throughout this year’s festival. 👏

☀️ A quick Granville Island break! ☀️

What an incredible week we’ve had at this year’s Chamberfest! After a week of focused rehearsals and hard work, our talented musicians enjoyed an exciting outing to Granville Island filled with tasty food, sunshine, and plenty of fun. It was the perfect way to take a break and recharge before their upcoming concerts this weekend! 🤩
