➡️ Haiti-born, Montreal-based multidisciplinary artist, Manuel Mathieu is known for his paintings, which investigate themes of historical violence, erasure, as well as Haitian visual cultures of physicality, nature, and religious symbolism.

Marrying abstract and figurative techniques, his compositions carve out space for us to reflect on Haiti’s transformative history while inviting us to consider the different futures the act of remembering creates.

Drawing from a wide-range of subjects, Manuel’s practice combines his Haitian heritage and his formal arts education, which culminated in an MFA Degree from Goldsmiths, University of London.

➡️ Gordon Hall is an artist based in New York who makes sculptures and performances. Hall has had solo presentations at the MIT List Visual Arts Center, The Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, The Renaissance Society, EMPAC, and Temple Contemporary, and has been in group exhibitions at The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Brooklyn Museum, The Hessel Museum, Art in General, White Columns, Socrates Sculpture Park, among many other venues. Hall’s writing and interviews have been published widely including in Art Journal, Artforum, Art in America, and Bomb, as well as in Walker Art Center's Artist Op-Ed Series, What About Power? Inquiries Into Contemporary Sculpture (published by SculptureCenter), Documents of Contemporary Art: Q***r (published by Whitechapel and MIT Press,) and Theorizing Visual Studies (Routledge). A volume of Hall’s collected essays, interviews, and performance scripts was published by Portland Institute for Contemporary Art in 2019. Hall is Assistant Professor of Sculpture at Vassar College and will be 2022 resident faculty at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.

➡️ Natalie Ball was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. She has a Bachelor’s degree with a double major in Ethnic Studies and Art from the University of Oregon. She furthered her education in New Zealand at Massey University where she attained her Master’s degree, focusing on Indigenous contemporary art. Ball then relocated to her ancestral homelands to raise her three children. Her work has been shown at the Vancouver Art Gallery; Blue & Poe, LA; Gagosian, NY; among many other venues. Natalie attained her MFA in Painting & Printmaking at Yale School of Art in 2018. She is the recent recipient of the 2021 Native Arts and Culture’s Foundation Oregon Native Arts Fellowship. 🔆

We are excited to kick off our fall 2021 VISUAL ART FORUM series next week with Chicago-based artist DIANNA FRID ✨ Please join us on Zoom at 4:00 pm pst on Wednesday, September 22nd ✨ Info is below. ✨

➡️Dianna Frid is an artist working at the intersections material texts and textiles. Her artist’a books and mixed-media works make visible the tactile manifestations of language. In her work, embroidery is a prominent vehicle for exploring the relationships between writing and drawing; and the overlaps of transcription, translation, and legibility. 📚📝🎨🧵🧶
