We are excited to share that 72 initiatives from UBC teacher candidates have been selected to receive the Emily Longworth Memorial Award. For nearly two decades, this award has honoured Emily’s legacy by providing financial support for experiential, place-based learning opportunities.

In their upcoming 10-week practicum, these projects will engage 2,432 elementary students in classrooms throughout the Lower Mainland.

To date, this fund has supported 717 innovative projects at UBC and SFU, benefitting 846 teacher candidates and 27,633 elementary students.

A sincere thank you to the Longworth family for their continued partnership in promoting expansive and equitable education.

2025/26 teacher candidate student award nominations are open!

Current TCs can self-nominate for a BEd award. There are several to be won. Most come with financial remittance and all awards strengthen a teacher candidate’s resume. These scholarships and awards recognize outstanding performance in coursework, practicum and the BEd program overall.

Teacher candidates can self-nominate by submitting a nomination form supported by two references. (Note, at least one of your referees **must be a BEd course instructor**.) The deadline to submit your self-nomination is May 30, 2026.

Last week, the TEO and a group of dedicated teacher candidates travelled to the University of Winnipeg for WestCAST 2026. Guided by the fitting theme “Together. We Grow!”, this year’s conference welcomed, for the first time ever, French-language institutions from across Canada and international partners from the University of the West Indies.

Shout out to Dryden Grosset (NITEP Secondary), Justin Salinas (Secondary French & ESA Academic Coordinator), Nathan Spencer (Secondary French) and Nick Watts (NITEP Year 3) for their participation and dedication to being part of the conversation and representing UBC so well!

Wishing our secondary teacher candidates the best of luck tomorrow on the first day of the 10-week extended practicum!🎒📚

Here are some words of encouragement from Jody Billingsley, TEO Program Manager – Secondary Practicum ⬇️

"You are about to experience a thrilling chapter in your teacher education journey – the certification practicum. Remember to take care of yourself and foster strong educational relationships with your students, your school advisor(s), your faculty advisor, and the wider school community.

This is your chance to showcase your skills, knowledge, and initiative, and learn from those advising you and from those you teach. Remember to receive feedback with grace and listen with open ears and an open heart – there is something to be learned in every piece of feedback. The 10 weeks will go by quickly, so embrace the challenges, celebrate the wins, and trust yourself.

The joy you experience, the connections you make, and the knowledge and practices attained will benefit you for the rest of your teaching career. All the best as you begin your practicum this week. Step forward with confidence, compassion, and purpose – You’ve got this!" ✨️🏫

February is Black History Month, an opportunity for a focused, intentional, and elevated reflection and recognition of Black history and achievement including the many historical and contemporary contributions of Black Canadians, Black British Columbians and Black students, faculty and staff at UBC.

The 2026 theme for Black History Month is “30 Years of Black History Month: Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations — From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries“. By framing the theme around “Black Brilliance Across Generations”, here in the Faculty of Education and in the TEO, we emphasize continuity, resilience, and progress inviting reflection on historical achievements, inspiring future possibilities, and shaping Canada’s future. Educating ourselves on our responsibilities, and empowering our community to build a just and civil society, is part of our collective aspirations as educators.
