It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Robert (Bob) Aitken, a dedicated and beloved instructor who was a cherished member of the Vancouver Community College family for over 30 years. Bob passed away peacefully on September 11, 2024, at the age of 80.

Bob’s tenure at VCC began in 1989 when he joined the School of Instructor Education, where he made an indelible mark through his leadership in the Provincial Instructor Diploma Program and the Diploma in Adult Education Program. Throughout his remarkable career, Bob developed and taught courses that spanned a wide range of subjects, including Planning for Instruction, The Adult Learner, and Educational Leadership, among many others.

With a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Oregon and doctoral studies in Adult Education at UBC, Bob was known for his deep understanding of how people learn and his passion for integrating brain research into teaching. His vast knowledge, combined with his practical approach and warm sense of humor, made his classes engaging and inspiring for countless students.

Beyond the walls of the classroom, Bob’s impact was felt far and wide. His work took him across Canada, collaborating with educators, leaders, and organizations to share his expertise and inspire excellence in teaching and learning. His commitment to lifelong learning, kindness, and generosity of spirit was evident in everything he did.

Bob was also a man of many passions—he was an avid reader, nature lover, and skilled photographer. He had a deep love for animals, his garden, and the beauty of the world around him. His friends and family fondly remember his wit, his endless curiosity, and his love of laughter, qualities that made him not only an exceptional educator but also a truly wonderful person.

Bob’s contributions to VCC and to the broader educational community will never be forgotten. His legacy of excellence, empathy, and dedication to learning will live on in the countless lives he touched.

On behalf of the VCC community, we extend our deepest condolences to Bob’s family and friends during this difficult time. He will be greatly missed, but his memory and the lasting impact of his work will forever be cherished.
