“The barriers to hiring faculty who indicate that they have a disability are much higher than for many others. And I think that’s partially because of our lack of understanding around disability and around accommodation. I think it’s also about the narrow confines of a tenure path […] We need to be giving more thought, not just to representational diversity, but to the environments that we’re bringing faculty into…” says Dr. Sara-Jane Finlay, UBC’s associate vice-president, equity and inclusion, in University Affairs' article on the Canada Research Chair program and equity.

If participating postsecondary institutions don’t meet their targets by the end of 2029, the number of research chairs they receive will be cut.

On June 30th, join Professor David Chariandy and Professor Ayesha S. Chaudhry in conversation about her new book, “The Colour of God”

“The Colour of God is the story of a child raised in Canada by parents who embraced a puritanical version of Islam to shield them from racism. By revisiting a series of pivotal moments in her life, Dr. Chaudhry examines the colonial, racial i ed, and gendered beliefs and ideals with which she was raised. Braiding together Western, South Asian, and Quranic storytelling styles, Chaudhry weaves her personal experiences which social commentary, and invites us to reimagine our ideas of self and family, state and citizenship, love and loss. “

Lest we forget - and as we remember all those who served, let us call to attention the sacrifices and contributions of Indigenous and People of Colour. “We know so little beyond the default image of a Canadian soldier that Indigenous men in uniform or Black Canadian soldiers are still considered an anomaly.”

One-sided narratives are fuelled by anachronistic aspirations of nation-building. The nation has been built — it’s time to move on.
