September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation—a day to honour the children who never returned home, Survivors of residential schools, their families and Indigenous communities.

It is also an opportunity to listen, learn and reflect on our shared responsibility to advance reconciliation.

A new temporary IRCC public policy may make short-term education more accessible for eligible work permit holders in Canada.

Under the policy, individuals holding a valid work permit may study in a course or program lasting six months or less without obtaining a separate study permit. Studies must be completed within six months or before the work permit expires—whichever comes first.

The policy took effect on September 4, 2026, and is scheduled to remain in place until December 31, 2027.

At LCC, part of ISSofBC, we see this as a meaningful opportunity for workers to strengthen their English, build practical skills and pursue professional development while continuing to work in Canada.
