UBC Giving Day is tomorrow! Join the UBC community in coming together for a 24-hour day of giving—supporting the programs and opportunities that matter most to students, alumni, and friends.

This year, the Department of Theatre and Film is raising funds for the Film Program & Equipment Fund, which helps Film Production students access essential equipment, bursaries, and festival submission fees so they can create professional-quality work and gain real-world experience.

Tomorrow only, your gift can go even further:

• The first $500 donated will be matched by Theatre & Film faculty and staff
• When 10 alumni give, an additional $500 gift from Dr. Shannon Walsh will be unlocked

Every gift helps remove barriers and ensures students have the tools they need to bring their stories to life.

The Spring Critical Thinkers Series continues!

On February 27, join us for Producing Sovereignty: Indigenous Cinema and Media and Institutional Contexts in Canada with Karrmen Crey (Simon Fraser University). This talk examines how Indigenous filmmakers and media creators in Canada have navigated and reshaped national institutions, particularly the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network, and argues that these negotiations directly shape on-screen content, making institutional analysis a valuable framework for interpreting the representational strategies of Indigenous media texts.

📅 Friday, February 27 @ 3 pm
📍Dodson Room, Irving K. Barber Learning Centre

Admission is free and open to the public. See you there!

This spring’s Critical Thinkers Series, presented by the Centre for Cinema Studies and Cinema Thinks the World, brings leading voices in cinema and media studies to campus from January to May (swipe to see the full schedule).

Join us for the second talk in the series by Dr. Erin Shevaugn Schlumpf (Ohio University): Remnants of Refusal: Feminist Affect, National Trauma. Drawing from her new book (SUNY Press, 2025), Schlumpf explores how films and texts respond to historical trauma through feminist refusal, foregrounding affective states like melancholy, ambivalence, and exhaustion that resist the demand to “move on.” The talk introduces these ideas through a reading of Emily Xiaobai Tang’s Conjugation (2001), set in Beijing during the winter of 1989.
