Happy Global Surgery Day 2026! 🌍
This year’s theme, “Systems Do Save Lives,” is a reminder that improving access to surgical care is truly a team effort. This includes creating opportunities for training and building long-term support to strengthen healthcare systems and ensure that people can receive safe care when and where they need it.
According to the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery, nearly 44% of the global population lives in countries with fewer than 20 specialist surgical providers per 100,000 people, with rural and underserved communities often facing the greatest barriers to care.
At the UBC Branch for Global Surgical Care, we are proud to support learners and health professionals working to improve surgical care in their communities and beyond. Over the past year, the Branch celebrated more than 15 graduates from our Master’s and Graduate Certificate programs in Global Surgical Care.
Through the UBC Global Surgery Lab, we also continue to support education and research initiatives grounded in equity and community partnership. Recently, the Lab celebrated Dr. Garang and Dr. Joseph as completers of the Vital Surgery Training Program, an 18-month task-sharing initiative developed in partnership with Médecins Sans Frontières. The program equips non-surgeon physicians in resource-limited settings with essential surgical skills through online learning, mentorship, and hands-on training.
Every link in the system matters. Thank you to everyone who continues to support global surgery work!
