First Nations & Indigenous Studies

First Nations & Indigenous Studies A degree in First Nations Studies prepares students for careers and advanced study in which collaboration with Indigenous communities plays an important role.

The First Nations and Indigenous Studies program is an interdisciplinary undergraduate major/minor program within the Institute of Critical Indigenous Studies offering courses to students in the Faculty of Arts at UBC. In the program, students learn about Indigenous history, arts and culture, systems of knowledge, political theory and activism, and strategize approaches to contemporary issues. The

program works to develop critical perspectives, theoretical frameworks, and practical skills that will support work and research with communities and Aboriginal organizations. This is exemplified through our 400-level Research Practicum, where students negotiate, design, and implement independent research projects in collaboration with Aboriginal organizations. UBC is located in a major urban centre with many Aboriginal communities and organizations nearby, but it is also on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Musqueam people. FNSP is committed to relationships with Musqueam and other Aboriginal communities, and each year we initiate and participate in projects and events that bring students, elders, leaders, scholars and other community members together to share knowledge and experiences.
