UBC Arts Students Centre

UBC Arts Students Centre The Arts Students Centre is a student-driven initiative to plan and build a new home for the undergraduate students of UBC's largest faculty.

On February 15 2013, the Arts Undergraduate student body voted by a 60/40 majority to approve and fund a brand new Arts Students Centre. The referendum – spearheaded by the vision of the Arts Undergraduate Society – saw a record number of voters decide that the Arts Students Centre would be a worthwhile investment for our campus, our community, and our collective futures. The ASC hopes to be a bea

utiful, functional, and spacious home worthy of the largest faculty on campus. We want to create a vision for this space together with you, the Arts undergraduate student population at large, which will engage and strengthen the Arts community at UBC.

YOUR NEW H(AUS) - opening on MONDAY 🥳💜

We are proud to say that all 11,000 sq ft. of the Arts Student Centre was built with sustainability in mind 🌱. Here are some fun sustainability facts about the ASC!✨

🏅LEED Gold Certified🏅
· Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a third-party certification program and an internationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings. The ASC is LEED Gold certified.

✨Passive Ventilation and Thermal Mass✨
· The building automation system operates windows to ventilate the building by day and flush out by night where the thermal mass of the building can discharge the daily heat gain.

☀️Passive Solar Design☀️
· Areas of opaque wall and vertical fins are positioned to minimize heat solar gain. The covered outdoor spaces and landscaped areas provide rain-protected outdoor areas with direct daylight, and shades the interior common spaces.

💜Efficient Building Envelope💜
· The cylindrical form is highly efficient from a building envelope thermal performance standpoint In addition to best practices for air tightness and thermal bridging detailing, a strategic decision was made to eliminate as many openings as possible. Windows and skylights seal much better than louvers and serve multiple purposes for views, daylighting and ventilation.

✨ARTS STUDENT CENTRE✨

💜In 2013, the Arts undergraduate student body voted to approve and fund a brand new Arts Students Centre. The referendum – spearheaded by the vision of the Arts Undergraduate Society – saw a record number of voters 🎉 In 2017, UBC’s Faculty of Arts donated $2.5 million dollars towards the project.

💜Since its conceptualization in 2012, generations of AUS Executives have worked hard to create a unifying space for the 14,000 Arts students. ✨ The Arts Student Centre will be the new home for the undergraduate students of UBC’s largest faculty. It will serve as a unifying and inclusive space for all Arts students, becoming a common ground for us to interact across disciplines 💜

ARTS STUDENT CENTRE DESIGN UPDATE:

These images display different options for the materiality of the exterior of the new Arts Student Centre. They also provide a sneak-peek into the interior of the ASC, featuring a covered outdoor deck which looks upon the intersection of East Mall and Walter Gage Road.

The final 4 images are of a detailed floor plan of the new Arts Student Centre; Levels 1-3 make up the majority of the project program with a gross area of roughly 9000 sq. ft.

We aim to use these updates to increase engagement with our constituents and welcome feedback on the ongoing work of the Arts Student Centre Working Group.

We encourage you to share this post to get more people to be a part of the development of our new hAUS!

On Thursday, May 23rd, President Ono published a tweet regarding the possible relocation of the Arts Student Centre. In response to this, we would like to issue the following statement:

The Arts Undergraduate Society is currently working with several on-campus groups to actively investigate the concerns that have arisen with this statement. Dr. Ono’s remark was made unilaterally from the President’s office – neither the AUS nor any other stakeholders associated with the project were consulted before President Ono published his tweet.

The Arts Undergraduate Society will be in conversation with Campus and Community Planning to understand how this announcement was made without prior consultation, and will ensure a timely and comprehensive review.

We wish to assure all Arts students that the Dean’s Office of the Faculty of Arts and the Arts Undergraduate Society are committed to the completion of the Arts Student Centre.

We will continue to update our constituents as more information comes to light over the next week. Any further questions should be directed to the Arts Student Centre page at https://www.facebook.com/ascubc/
