From Artist Alley and live drawing sessions to networking, screenings, and industry conversations – SKETCH to SCREEN brought together students, alumni, and industry professionals for an evening celebrating creativity, collaboration, and connection 🎨✨

Hosted by VFS School of Animation, the event created space for artists to showcase their work, connect with industry, and share in the creative energy that continues to shape Vancouver’s animation community.

How does a film set actually work? 🎬

Students from Writing for Film, Television & Games stepped into Studio 6 with Film instructor Arun Fryer for a hands-on workshop exploring the realities of working on set.

From learning how departments collaborate to seeing equipment, communication, and production workflows in action, students got a behind-the-scenes look at what it really takes to bring stories from script to screen 📺

Because great writers don’t just understand story – they understand the environment those stories come to life in.

On May 9, VFS Makeup Design students had the opportunity to hear from Oscar-nominated makeup artist Donald Mowat, whose credits include Dune, Blade Runner 2049, Sicario, and the James Bond films Skyfall and Spectre, during a special on-campus presentation and Q&A 👏

From sharing behind-the-scenes stories and creative challenges to offering honest industry advice, Donald gave students an inside look at the art and professionalism behind production makeup. “It was an honour for me to learn some of the industry’s secrets from such a talented artist,” one student shared.

Vancouver Film School regularly welcomes top industry talent to our Production Centre for student lectures. Past guests include Longlegs writer/director Osgood Perkins, Final Destination: Bloodlines director Zach Lipovsky, and actor Zach Galifianakis 🎬

VFS Alum Milton Ng Receives Creative BC Funding for Upcoming Feature ‘New Diamond Restaurant’ 🎥

Vancouver Film School Film Production alum Milton Ng continues building momentum behind his upcoming feature film ‘New Diamond Restaurant’, which recently received $120,000 in production funding through Creative BC Domestic Motion Picture Fund.

The project was one of seven B.C. productions selected in the latest round of funding, supporting locally developed feature films, documentaries, and series projects.

Set in a small-town Chinese restaurant during a zombie outbreak, ‘New Diamond Restaurant’ follows aspiring hockey player Aaron Chan as he’s forced to step up and protect his family when chaos erupts around them. Ng is attached as a producer alongside an impressive creative team.

The project also grew from ‘Dinner Rush’, a concept short film that helped secure support from both Creative BC and Telefilm, showcasing how short-form storytelling can evolve into a fully realized feature project. The film is currently preparing to go to camera this September 🎬
