Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience Lab - UBC Our lab specializes in the study of prefrontal cortex (PFC) and executive functions (EFs), especially in young children. Join us! Participate!

Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience is an interdisciplinary field devoted to understanding how children’s minds change as they grow up, interrelations between that & how the brain is changing, and environmental and biological influences on that. Our lab specializes in studying a region of the brain known as prefrontal cortex (PFC) and the cognitive abilities that depend on it, especially in young

children. Those abilities are often called executive functions and consist of cognitive control functions such as cognitive flexibility, inhibition (attentional control, self-control), working memory, reasoning, and problem-solving. We are looking to enroll young people 8-12 years old in the Greater Vancouver, BC area in a research study.

The same, or substantially overlapping brain systems, subserve both executive functions & balance. Thus, improving that brain system by practicing balance, might improve both executive functions & balance. Music improves mood and a happy mood leads to better EFs. Thus, listening to much-loved music might improve executive functions.

Some children in the study will be randomly assigned to do simple balance exercise (like standing on one foot or walking while balancing a book on your head) or to watch music videos of their choice.

Perks:
- This training is FREE
- This training is ONLY 15-min a day, a few days a week, at your own HOME.
- Those in the Balance-Training Group will get a balance beam, wobble board, etc. to keep for free.
- Those in the Watching-Music-Videos Group will get several music videos of their choice to keep for free.
- Feedback on your child’s executive functions and balance will be provided before & after.

To find out more, contact Dr. Priscilla Paz at [email protected] or (604)-649-0702. Contacting us in no way obligates you or your child to participate.

Important: If you comment on this post, or “like” this post, you will be publicly identified with the study.

Principal Jeff Hopkins and students from the Pacific School of Innovation and Inquiry in Victoria, BC, visited our lab today to learn about dev. cog. neurosci. from Prof. Diamond.

Now that they’ve experienced the neurocognitive tests, Hearts & Flowers and Flanker & Reverse Flanker, they have a better sense of what these assess.

A Reminder for Mother’s Day that all the ‘little’ things parents do for their children mean so very much.

It’s the simple, everyday things we do for our children that tells them we love them and that’s the most valuable message a child can get:

http://www.joinvroom.org/superheroes

Indeed, the Vroom website has lots of very useful info for parents of young children:

Every day, in homes across the country, parents and caregivers do something extraordinary: They help build the foundation for their child’s lifelong learning.
