Congratulations to Prof. Doug Oldenburg, who has been inducted into the 2024 class of AGU (American Geophysical Union) Fellows!

The AGU Fellowship is a prestigious award that recognizes excellence in Earth and Planetary Sciences. Dr. Douglas Oldenburg has contributed greatly to the field by developing inversion methods and applications to solve diverse geophysical problems.

Doug is an emeritus professor in EOAS and founder of the UBC Geophysical Inversion Facility. In addition to the 2024 AGU Fellowship, he has won numerous other awards for teaching and research. He is a recognized Fellow of the Royal Society, SEG Honorary Membership Recipient, and TeckCominco Senior Keevil Chair in Mineral Exploration. He is passionate about teaching and making geophysics accessible to all and has developed a number of open-source resources for students and educators of geophysics.

Congratulations to Prof. Mark Jellinek, who has been inducted into the 2024 class of AGU (American Geophysical Union) Fellows!

Since 1962, fewer than 0.1% of AGU members have been selected as Fellows by the AGU Union Fellows Committee. Mark's selection is a testament to his unwavering dedication and invaluable contributions to his field, resulting in significant advances in the geosciences.

Mark has been a faculty member within UBC EOAS since 2005, and is a Professor of Geophysics. Mark's research span a diverse range of topics across Earth and planetary science, including but not limited to studies of volcanic plumes and their deposits, super-continental break-up and interaction with Earth's climate, and how geomorphology of the High Arctic can give us insights into the formation and habitability of other planets.

New research published this week in Nature Communications from lead author Dr. Matthijs Smit, Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair, with PhD students Kira Musiyachenko and Jeroen Goumans.

The researchers used specific chemical tracers that are unaffected by geological alteration processes to identify the source of the rocks that made up most of the newly formed continental crust during the Archaean.

Trends in the compositions of these rocks indicate that they formed during slow burial, thickening and melting of precursor oceanic plateau crust.

This discovery provides a novel explanation of how continental crust may have originated without requiring an external driver, such as a meteorite impact - this discovery is a paradigm shift from the way geoscientists have understood the origins of continental crust and plate tectonics during the Archean era.
