New research by Dr. Alison Murray and colleagues suggests our endurance limits may be shaped at birth.

This incredibly unique study shows that birth weight influences how the body responds to extreme endurance exercise. Studying ultramarathon runners, Dr. Murray et al., found that kidney stress during ultra endurance events was lowest in individuals born around eight pounds, with higher stress at both lower and higher birth weights.

The findings challenge the idea that endurance is shaped by training alone, showing that early life biology can place real constraints on adult performance—even in elite athletes. It’s a powerful reminder that our evolutionary adaptations for endurance still have limits.

On May 12, students in ANTH 485, Textiles in Experimental Archaeology visited with Elder May Sam to learn how to clean and card sheep fleece. Later in the day, the respected elder taught us how to weave the wool into small bags. As is customary with local practices, students will give their first bags away and then make a new one for their own use.

UVic hosts international ocean history conference
June 15-19 | UVic Law building

Oceans Past XI is an international conference being hosted on campus by the Departments of Anthropology, Environmental Studies, and History. With a theme of “Ocean Connected Communities,” this event has been officially endorsed by the UN Ocean Decade Heritage Network and supported by a €10,000 travel grant from the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea to enable travel for early career researchers to present at this conference.

To help foster meaningful engagement with the broader community, single ticket passes will be available on site for non presenters and non members to participate. The opening night of the conference will be held at the Vic Theatre downtown Victoria and feature two Indigenous films and presentations by Daniel Pauly and Christina Brito.
