UVic HINF grads don't just study digital health. They help shape it.

After completing UVic's HTIS Graduate Certificate and earning an MSc in Health Informatics, Victoria is now pursuing a PhD in Health Informatics, building specialized expertise in health information standards including SNOMED CT, LOINC, HL7, and FHIR.

Today, she works in interoperability, helping health systems connect data, improve workflows, and support safer, more coordinated care.

Her journey highlights the growing demand for professionals with specialized knowledge in health terminology, standards, and interoperability.

"Virtual care adds a whole new dimension to healthcare." πŸ’™

For Maya El-Lakany, the future of healthcare is already here.

After completing UVic's Combined Major in Computer Science and Health Information Science, Maya's co-op with Island Health's Virtual Care team helped launch a career in digital health. Today, she works in implementation and data analytics, helping support virtual care initiatives that connect patients, providers, and communities.

"Virtual care adds a whole new dimension to healthcare. We will always need in-person doctors, but it is a different way to use clinicians. It is the future. Such a great tool."

Maya says HINF stood out because it combined her interests in healthcare, technology, and problem-solving while providing practical skills she still uses every day.

From co-op experiences to career-ready learning, HINF prepares students to help shape the future of healthcare.

After several years with HINF, Alana is stepping into a new role as our Marketing & Recruitment Specialist! With a background in professional communications, strategic marketing, content creation, and community engagement, Alana brings a wealth of experience to her new position. She holds a BA in Professional Communications from Royal Roads University and a Community and Justice Services Diploma from Algonquin College.

Alana is excited to continue growing with HINF and sharing the stories, people, programs, and opportunities that make our School so special. Outside of work, she enjoys exploring the outdoors and adventuring around Vancouver Island with her partner and their dog, Maya.

Welcome, Erin! πŸ‘‹

We're excited to welcome Erin to the HINF team as our new Assistant to the Director and Office Manager!

Erin joins HINF with a background in administration, human resources, and operations, bringing experience from Ocean Networks Canada and Van Isle Marina. She holds a BSc in Anthropology from UVic and is currently completing a Business Diploma in Human Resources and Leadership at Camosun College.

A Vancouver Island local, Erin is excited to be back at UVic and become part of the HINF community. Outside of work and school, you can find her camping, hiking, crafting, reading, or spending time with her husband, dog, and two cats!

From bedside nursing to systems-level thinking.

After several years working as a nurse, Austin wanted a deeper understanding of the systems and technologies shaping healthcare delivery.

That curiosity led him to pursue graduate studies in Health Informatics at UVic.

πŸ’¬ "I wanted a greater understanding of the systems used in healthcare so I could help make better decisions in our frontline services."

Through his studies, Austin gained new perspectives on digital health, research, and healthcare systems while developing the ability to see healthcare through a systems-level lens.

Today, he works as a Clinical Nurse Mentor, supporting nurses in practice and helping bridge the gap between technology and patient care. This fall, he is continuing his academic journey as a PhD student in Nursing at UVic.
