Hurricane Katrina was one of the most intense in U.S. history. But not everyone felt the effects equally, says Dr. Patricia Stukes, who teaches in RRU's Master of Arts in Disaster and Emergency Management program.

For National AccessAbility Week, we spoke with MA Global Leadership alum Margarita Jarrín and Alejandro Campos-Garcia, head of Human Rights and Accessibility at Royal Roads, about accessibility, stigma and the importance of building inclusive systems shaped by lived experience, not just policy.

“Accessibility for me is changing, it is evolving, it has to be proactive,” says Jarrín, whose capstone research explored the experiences of international students with disabilities navigating higher education systems.

“If we don’t include people with lived experiences in the process, we are not doing meaningful accessibility,” Campos-Garcia says.
