From contributing to paediatric research in Kenya to developing communication training modules for journalists and entrepreneurs in East Africa, UVic co-op students working at the Aga Khan University (AKU) are making meaningful contributions.
Morgan (she/her, pictured) completed a co-op work term as a research assistant at Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) in Nairobi, Kenya. She focused on paediatric neurology and conducted a study that explores the burden of care experienced by caregivers of children diagnosed with ADHD.
As a global university operating across Asia, East Africa and UK, AKU is also UVic's 2025 International Co-op Partner of the Year.
AKU is part of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), one of the world’s largest development networks dedicated to improving quality of life in underserved communities.
The AKU’s International Internship Programme, established in 2008, has welcomed UVic co-op students since 2013. Together, UVic and AKU have facilitated over a decade of sustained student engagement, including more than 20 placements across healthcare research, education, communications, and institutional initiatives.
“Partnerships such as this demonstrate the value of experiential learning that is both globally grounded and locally relevant, enabling students to contribute meaningfully across diverse academic and development contexts,” says Fareena Feroze, Director of Global Engagement at AKU.
