As organizations across Canada face new trends, technology, tariffs and uncertainties, leaders may find themselves at complex crossroads.

In July, the English Language Centre at UVic welcomed its first participants in English Communication for Healthcare, a new program for healthcare professionals studying or working in the field.

Eight participants from Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara took part in an immersive two-week experience focused on building practical English for real-world healthcare settings. Through role-playing, case studies and site visits—including to the Cool Aid Community Health Centre and the Island Medical Program—they strengthened their ability to communicate with patients, colleagues and care teams.

“I learned how to communicate with patients and with coworkers, and how to remember the little things that matter,” says participant Karen Gabriela Daniel Cruz. “I feel more confident and more prepared to talk with people in general.”

Do you ever feel like you’re handling a lot at once—deadlines, people, budgets and the unexpected? You might already be using project management skills without realizing it.

Amber McMillan, an instructor with Continuing Studies at UVic, says project management isn’t reserved for big projects or one specific industry. It’s a set of skills anyone can use to work better, handle change and build their career.

“I really believe all of us are project managers on some level,” she says. “My advice for anyone is to do enough due diligence to understand what project management is, because you are already a part of it.”
