Our two campuses serve approximately 19,000 learners a year in certificate, diploma, bachelor's degree and continuing education programs. The college welcomed its first students in 1971 and adopted the name “Camosun”, a local Lkwungen (Songhees) First Nation name meaning “where different waters meet and are transformed.” Today, Camosun College offers over 160 innovative programs to help meet the needs of students and communities in Victoria and beyond.

We are delighted to announce the recipient of the 2026 Distinguished Alumni Award from Camosun College – Dr. Shawn Shortill, in recognition of his leadership and contributions to the scientific community.✨✌🏼🩺

He started his career at Camosun with an Associate of Science Degree in Biology before completing his Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Microbiology at the University of Victoria ( )Shawn then went on to earn a PhD in Medical Genetics from The University of British Columbia ( ). His subsequent postdoctoral research at the BC Cancer Research Centre helped establish a precision medicine start-up company called Arrowsmith Genetics, Inc.

Currently Director of Product Management at MindWalk Biologics, Shawn leads a team of immunologists and business professionals in developing life-saving antibody therapeutics and critical research reagents for hospitals and universities.

In addition to his academic achievements and career accomplishments, Shawn gives back to the scientific community in BC by acting as an advocate and communicator. He also periodically returns to Camosun as a guest lecturer in science courses.

Shawn has some advice for current students. “With a Camosun education, you can reach heights that may have felt unattainable when you started your program. Stay in contact with your instructors and your peers. Some of my Camosun colleagues have become lifelong friends, coworkers and partners in business.”

Congratulations Monika Bhardwaj - recipient of the 2026 Promising Alumni Award from Camosun College, in recognition of her community service and continued commitment to lifelong learning.✨✌🏼

Monika moved from India to Canada with a Bachelor of Psychology in 2021, in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, to pursue post-degree studies in Business Administration, HR Management and Leadership option at Camosun.

She served on the Board of Directors for Camosun College Student Society and was recognized for her academic and service achievements with 2023 Lieutenant Governor’s Medal for Inclusion, Democracy and Reconciliation.

Monika exemplifies lifelong learning, consistently investing time and effort to deepen her knowledge after graduation and strengthen her ability to lead with insight, empathy and impact. She earned Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) designation in 2025, became certified in advanced leadership practices and completed specialized trauma-informed training.

Monika has some advice for current students. “We’re navigating tremendous change in technology, the workforce, and education. While change can be hard, but don’t let it overwhelm you. Stay curious, do your research and resist the urge to map out your entire life at once.”

Monika will receive her award at the graduation ceremony on June 17🎓

Parking during Convocation 2026 (June 16-18)🚘

✅Parking is free in Lots P8, P10 and P5 for graduates and guests. Space is limited, so carpooling is recommended.
✅Allow for time to park and walk to the PISE building.
✅Please observe the signage and follow directions from the traffic control personnel.
✅Accessible parking spaces are available but must be reserved in advance. Please email [email protected] to make arrangements. There is also a drop-off area near the PISE entrance for those with mobility challenges.
✅Golf carts will be available on the day to assist guests. Please inform the parking lot attendants if you or your guests require a drop-off at the venue.
