The eagle and the orca—two symbols deeply rooted in the Lək̓ʷəŋən creation story—come to life in 48 new banners across campus.

Designed by Dr. Clarence “Butch” Dick, a renowned Lək̓ʷəŋən master carver, these banners reflect the Nation’s creation story, with the eagle symbolizing peace and friendship, and the orca representing longevity, protection, and family.

💬 “The concept… is a contemporary approach to the traditional and powerful symbols of the eagle and killer whale. Culturally, the orca is part of the emergence story of the wolf people.” – Dr. Clarence “Butch” Dick

These banners replace the 215+ banners created by Carey Newman in response to the discovery of unmarked graves at the Kamloops Residential School in 2021. During the 2024 Orange Shirt Day ceremony, UVic permanently raised the Survivors’ Flag to honour those impacted by residential schools.

For many years, the University of Victoria Libraries have been a proud supporter of student success through our library scholarships and awards program. In 2024, we celebrated four recipients:

➡️Lucy Balogh and Faith Lapointe (David Harris Flaherty Undergraduate Library Scholarship)
➡️Carly Palmer (William Petrie Graduate Library Scholarship)
➡️Spencer Leong Cowie (Nipp Mah Award)

Each scholarship recipient was awarded based on the merit and excellence of their 500-word essay about how they have used library resources—print, archival, music, multimedia, or digital—for a class project, assignment, or research paper.

Read all our scholarship recipients’ essays in our dedicated collection for UVic Libraries Student Scholarships in UVicSpace.
