Gustavson BCom students helped community members file more than 150 free tax returns through the Gustavson Community Volunteer Income Tax Program.
The student-led clinic supported community members, newcomers to Canada and UVic students, with more than 80% of clients receiving refunds.
For many, that support came with an unexpected bonus: money back they weren’t expecting.
“We had some very happy people at the tax clinic over the past couple of months,” says Courtney Haddock, a 3rd year BCom student who volunteered with the clinic. “Many weren’t expecting to get anything back, so it was a pleasant surprise for them and for the students helping them file.”
The program has been running since 2016, giving Gustavson students a way to build practical skills while offering free tax support to people in the community.
“When you’re a student, even $200 or $500 can make a big difference,” says Courtney. “It made our team happy to know we could help in that way.”
