The stats don’t lie: Alcohol remains a leading cause of preventable death, injury, and disability across Canada. But here in BC where alcohol consumption is higher than average, this reality hits even closer to home.

Drawing from research expertise and data from the University of Victoria’s Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research (CISUR), the Office of the Provincial Health Officer has released "Living Well, Drinking Less: Reducing Alcohol Harms in BC”, a report documenting alcohol’s impact on British Columbians.

💬 “It was a pleasure to work with Dr. Bonnie Henry and her office on this report, and we applaud the provincial health officer and her team for taking a detailed look at this important public-health issue.” - Tim Naimi, Director of CISUR.

All hands on deck for clean energy innovation. 🚢

With support from three University of Victoria-based research institutes, the Canadian Coast Guard is exploring clean energy technologies to displace its existing diesel generators.

The project is the first of a series of “innovation challenges” coming out of the BC Marine Energy and Decarbonzation Hub, a collaboration between Accelerating Community Energy Transformation (ACET), Pacific Regional Institute for Marine Energy Discovery (PRIMED) and the Institute for Integrated Energy Systems (IESVic) with the Center for Ocean Applied Sustainable Technologies (COAST).

💬 “Through the BC Marine Energy and Decarbonization Hub, we’re proud to contribute solutions that reduce diesel dependence, strengthen our ocean economy and empower coastal industries, operators and communities across the province.” - Lisa Kalynchuk, vice president of research and innovation.

Merrick Masales (electrical engineering) spent his co-op working with IMW Industries in Chilliwack, BC. He helped to create electrical drawings of Motor Control Centres (MCCs), control panels, compressor assemblies and more. Merrick also assisted in solving problems presented by the manufacturing team and resolving conflicts between electrical drawings.

💬“This co-op helped me put a real-world application to the concepts I learned in university and gave me insight into what skills to focus on in my degree to succeed as an engineer. It was very helpful witnessing the perspective of the employer in the hiring process and learning how to determine what strengths are valuable to them.” - Merrick Masales

“We’re very determined to continue economic growth while ensuring energy sovereignty,” says Kara Wilson Wilson, energy champion, about her Nation’s motivations for participating in the First Nations Utility Study.

The study examines the financial, technical and governance viability of First Nations utility models in the province, with the goal of advancing energy sovereignty and economic reconciliation.

Together with the Penticton Indian Band (Snpink’tn) and Kwikwasut’inuxw Haxwa’mis First Nation, the Quatsino First Nation is collaborating with the University of Victoria-led (ACET) initiative, and B.C. Ministry of Energy and Climate Solutions to take greater control of their future by generating their own clean electricity

You don’t have to choose between a career in finance and making a real-world impact. 🌎

UVic’s Impact Investing Hub is opening the door to a different kind of finance. One where success is measured not only by returns, but by the social and environmental change it helps create.

Running August 20–27, the Impact Investing Summer School gives students hands-on experience in impact investing under Accelerating Community Energy Transformation (ACET’s) Business and Finance Innovation research area.

💬 “if we want capital to support low-carbon, resilient and equitable economies, we need to train future investors to recognize and support the full range of opportunities driving that transition: from community-led energy projects to clean tech startups and climate-focused innovation.” - Basma Majerbi, Impact Investing Hub founder and Peter B. Gustavson School of Business professor.

📆 Interested in impact investing? Enroll by May 15th.

Are the abilities of athletes shaped at birth? 🏃

A new study led by University of Victoria biological anthropologist Alison Murray is raising questions about the biological limits of human endurance.

The study, published recently in Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution, focuses on how an individual’s birth weight may play a role in kidney health––a critical factor in endurance sports. Birth weight is already recognized as an independent risk factor for health outcomes later in life, and the research suggests it may also be linked to kidney resilience under extreme physical conditions.

💬 “Our study asks the question whether there is such a thing as ‘too much’ exercise, and how early-life biological factors may shape the body’s response to extreme physical demands.” –– Alison Murray

Chemistry student K'sana Wood Lynes-Ford (she/her) is passionate about engaging in work that advances medicine and research for Indigenous communities.

As a member of the Kwakwakaʼwakw (‘Namgis), Gitxsan (Gitanyow), and Tsimshian (Gitxaala) First Nations, she found co-op experiences that aligned with this goal, completing three work terms with the Swayne Lab and Community Genetics Research Program (CGRP) at the University of Victoria, leading to her being named one of the 2025 UVic Co-op Students of the Year.

K’sana worked with supervisors Dr. Laura Arbour and Dr. Leigh Anne Swayne to study the impacts of genetic variants on the health of the Gitxsan People.

Some genetic variants found in the Gitxsan First Nation have been associated with health conditions such as heart arrythmias, fainting, seizures, and brain aneurysms. This research is an example of community-based participatory research, where the research is driven by the community interests and needs.

“This project’s subject matter has personally affected me and my loved ones and because of this research I can personally aid in the effort to understand health issues affecting my community,” says K’sana.

“Throughout my time with the CGRP and Swayne Lab, I have visited the Gitxsan First Nation on two separate occasions to share my research contributions to my community.”

These WIL experiences have contributed to K’sana’s increased confidence in the lab and as a scientist – even leading to two publications.

K’sana is named after the Skeena River, known as the ’Ksan River, which runs through the heart of Gitxsan traditional territory. Her name loosely translates to “Woman of the River”.

Outside of co-op, K’sana is an active member of the UVic Indigenous student community. She currently serves on the Native Students Union Council as Firekeeper and has previously worked in the First People’s House as a campus cousin.

K’sana plans to become a medical doctor and continue to support Indigenous communities through ethical medical practice and research.
