When Michelle Prince set out to become a nurse more than two decades ago, her birth mother gifted her books on traditional knowledge that travel with Prince today.

A ‘60s Scoop survivor, Prince was not raised in her culture, as part of the Tse’Khene Nation, or around her family, although she visited her birth mother occasionally as a child. Instead, she grew up in a Catholic French-Canadian family and heard negative stereotypes about Indigenous people.

🎂 This year, we celebrate 50 years of the School of Nursing at the University of Victoria. Last week, we held a commemorative event to mark the occasion.

Founded in 1976 during a time of significant change, the School of Nursing opened access to degree education for nurses on Vancouver Island. Since then, the UVic School of Nursing has contributed to health care in British Columbia, Canada, and beyond, preparing generations of nurses, nurse leaders, researchers, and educators.

We celebrate this milestone with gratitude and look ahead with excitement for what’s next! 👏
