Using v***r deposition, ultra-thin layers of lithium and other metals are built with incredible precision, helping drive the future of energy storage.

💧 What’s really in a drop of water? At the EIT building, Nathan checked out an orbitrap mass spectrometer.
 
This instrument can identify what’s hiding in a tiny water sample by measuring molecules with incredible accuracy, helping researchers detect PFAS, microplastics, and other environmental contaminants.

Imagine being able to see something smaller than a nanometre 👀

Athan is back with more cool s*** he’s found in science! This week: a transmission electron microscope (TEM) that can image objects as small as 0.1 nanometres - small enough to reveal individual atomic structures!

Meet Cooper 👋, a Master of Science in Earth Sciences student at University of Waterloo!
 
Cooper’s research is focused on establishing a process-based understanding of methane, hydrogen sulfide, and carbon dioxide leakage from legacy wells in northern British Columbia. His findings can have direct implications for communities and governments that manage contamination risks and greenhouse gas emissions from legacy wells.

Athan is back with today’s discovery: a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer. 🧲

NMR works by placing a sample in a powerful magnetic field and hitting it with radiofrequency pulses. By measuring how atomic nuclei absorb and re-emit that energy, scientists can reveal a detailed chemical fingerprint of the sample.
